Today

Graduate and Professional Student Lunch

All graduate and professional students are invited to a free lunch at 1:00 pm today at Spanky's at the corner of Franklin and Columbia. This is an excellent opportunity to meet the chaplain. Also, remember that the Parish BBQ today is free for students.

We hope to see you at these two events.

Annual Parish BBQ

The Chapel of the Cross's Annual Parish BBQ is today at 6:30 pm. This wonderful celebration of fellowship will follow the 5:15 service and will be held on the parish grounds with a complete meal catered by Gillis's BBQ. A tradition that accompanies the BBQ is a parish food drive. Please bring three food items for the IFC Food Pantry.

Compline tonight at 9:30 pm

"Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is." The ancient monastic service of Compline, the "completion" of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.

Episcopal Youth Community

It was wonderful to see you at Kick-Off last week! There will be no EYC tonight. We hope you will join us during the Parish BBQ! Please email Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org to reserve your spot for the Ropes Course on Sept. 23. We will meet in the church parking lot at 1:30 pm and return around 5:30 pm. Current medical release forms are required.

THIS WEEK

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Welcome new and returning students. We are so very glad to have you and would love to greet you following the service. Undergraduates are invited to be a part of Episcopal Campus Ministry which meets every Tuesday night during the academic year. Join us for dinner and fellowship this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in our Campus Center. This Tuesday we will have details regarding a spring break trip to Honduras. We hope to see many of you there!

Book Discussion with
The Chancellor

Sister Helen Prejean's book, The Death of Innocents, is this year's UNC incoming student discussion book. Addressing the legal and religious arguments that have been used to justify the death penalty, the book explores the possibility that innocent people are being executed. The Chapel of the Cross has supported research into the use of the death penalty in North Carolina, and this issue is a concern of many in the parish. Chancellor Moeser will discuss the book and student response to it today at 10:20 am in the chapel.

Approaching Adolescence

Dr. John Tisdale, a therapist and Methodist minister, will present a two-part program for parents entitled "Approaching Adolescence." Please join us today and next Sunday during the church school hour to learn how our own feelings about the teenage years influence our parenting and how we can approach adolescence in a more positive way.

Next Week

Men's Prayer Breakfast

The next meeting of the Men's Prayer Breakfast will be Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 am. The proposed program is to be with St. Paul's, topic- our shared relationship. The scheduled cooks are Robert Hooks and Watty Bowes.

Parish Notes

Lay Delegates to the Annual Convention of the Diocese

The Annual Convention of the Diocese of North Carolina will be held at Koury Convention Center, Greensboro, Friday and Saturday, January 18 & 19, 2008. Returning Lay Delegates from the Chapel of the Cross are Paul Carew, Vivian Varner, Hugh Morrison, and Joe Ferrell. Delegates are elected for a term of three years; alternates for one year. Two additional delegates and alternates are to be elected by the vestry on Sept. 20. If you are interested in serving as a Lay Delegate to the Annual Convention, or would, with their permission, like to nominate someone, please notify the Clergy or the Senior Warden no later than Sept. 20.

Choirs

The Parish Choir has resumed rehearsals on Monday nights at 7:00 pm. New members are welcome in all voice parts. The Senior Choir had openings for soprano and tenor. Please see Dr. Quinn if you are interested.

Youth Inquirers

This year's Youth Inquirers' Class will meet in the second semester for eight two-hour sessions on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The class also includes two overnight retreats. For more information, contact David Frazelle at 929-2193.

Foyer Dinner Groups

HURRY! Only a short time left to fill out a Foyer Dinner sign-up sheet available in the dining room after every service. There is an opportunity to indicate an interest in a group for parents with young children. Foyer Dinner groups are a wonderful way to meet and share a meal with fellow parishioners. Groups of ten to twelve usually gather once a month. Each member or couple brings a contribution to the meal and the host provides the main course. Responses should be in the parish office by Sept. 18. For more information contact Amelia Carew or Sandy Gerow.

12:30 Social Hour

You are invited each week following the 11:15 Sunday morning service to enjoy food, fellowship and a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross with old-timers and newcomers alike. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Please log onto http://groups.yahoo.com/group/COTCsocialhour to join the new Social Hour list-serve. From there you can keep up with the group calendar, learn about volunteer opportunities and help continue the 12:30 Social Hour tradition. E-mail Anne Hoole (Hospitality Manager) at ahoole@thechapelofthecross.com if you have any questions or call Anne to find out more.

Conversations Concerning the Blessing of Same-Gender Unions

The rector and the vestry will host a series of parish gatherings as part of the discernment process about whether to extend the congregation's pastoral care for gay couples by offering a formal blessing of same-gender unions. These sessions will include an educational segment as well as a discussion segment. The dates and times of the sessions are as follows: Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 3:00 pm at Carol Woods; Sunday, Sept. 23 at 8:15 am (following the 7:30 service); Sunday, Sept. 23 at 12:45 pm (following the 11:15 service); Sunday, Sept. 30 at 6:15 pm (following the 5:15 service); Sunday, Oct. 7 at 11:00 am at Carolina Meadows (following the 10:00 service) Every parishioner is invited to come to one of the hour-long sessions. The vestry respectfully asks that those wishing to contribute to the discussion do so in a constructive manner that will build up the Body of Christ and not be hurtful to those in the congregation who may have a different opinion on this issue. Light hors d'oeuvres will be available at the sessions conducted at the church. On Sunday, Oct. 14, at 10:20 am a gathering for parents will be offered, titled "Talking to Kids about Gay Unions."

Dinners for Eight

Young adults in their 20's and 30's (roughly) are invited to sign up for Dinners For Eight, a series of monthly supper groups for singles and couples. David will arrange all participants into the groups of eight, taking into account marital and child status and will rearrange folks into new groups at the end of the semester. Registration forms are available in the parlor, the parish office and the back of the chapel and online at www.thechapelofthecross.org/fellowship/dinnersforeight.html. Contact David with questions at 929-2193, dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org.

Become an Acolyte

All 6th through 12th grade and undergraduate college students are invited to consider being an acolyte. Acolytes are key leaders in our worship here, and serving in this manner can form us spiritually in important ways. A mandatory training session for those who missed yesterday's is today following the 11:15 service and includes lunch. Please contact David Frazelle, 929-2193 or dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions or concerns.

Youth Saints Needed

The Children's Chapel needs youth assistants each Sunday morning to support the adult leaders. Youth Saints set up the chapel, greet preschoolers, help insure safety and encourage children to participate fully in the service. Young people in the third grade or older are assigned to teams that volunteer on a rotating basis (serving about once a month). An orientation session will be held today at 11:15 am in the chapel. All Youth Saints, including those with previous experience, are asked to attend or to arrange an individual orientation with Boykin Bell. For more information or to register for this service program, contact Boykin at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193.

Children's Chapel Welcomes Young Parishioners

Children's Chapel, our much beloved worship service for children ages two (and out of diapers) through kindergarten, welcomes young parishioners to meet on the playground during the 9:00 am service and progress with adult leaders to the chapel for music, stories and prayer. Children's Chapel follows the liturgy of the Episcopal Church and is wonderful preparation for the day children will sit in the church pews with their families. If you have questions about the transition to the Big Church, please contact Gretchen Jordan or Boykin Bell but please, do not send older children to Children's Chapel. We will welcome them back as Youth Saint volunteers (on a rotating schedule) when they reach the third grade.

1st & 2nd Grade
Worship Class

The worship class will begin on Sept. 30 and meet once a month through spring. Other dates will be announced. The class meets in the Library and Campus Center during the 9:00 service. Children begin in the library. While this is an opportunity for instruction in the liturgy, it also includes a worship component.

Heifer Gift Arks

The Gift Ark Campaign for Heifer International supplies animals to struggling communities in 125 countries around the world. Two successful campaigns in 2005 and 2006 call for a third! This year's effort spans five weeks, to conclude with a celebration at the Blessing of the Animals service on Oct. 2. Purchase a puzzle piece for $25, or begin saving in a new Heifer bank to purchase a puzzle piece before Oct. 2. Look for the Ark display in the dining hall, which includes information on the Heifer Gift Ark, ark-shaped collection boxes for youths, colorful cards for gift giving in honor or memory of others, and the puzzle itself! The Micah Group reminds us that Heifer Project efforts address many of the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals), and our gifts to Heifer help us reach individual targets of 0.7 of 1% giving toward the MDGs, as encouraged by the diocese and denomination.

Environmental Stewardship Committee Meeting

The first fall meeting of the Environmental Stewardship Committee will be held this Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the parish library. We will be planning our activities for the coming year. All are welcome. If you have questions about this meeting or about the committee, please contact Linda Rimer at lbrimer@bellsouth.net.

Stewardship Opportunities

IFC Needs

Now more than ever IFC volunteers and staff need your food donations since household requests for food have risen by 26.5% since January. Last year 9,204 bags of groceries were distributed to Carrboro and Chapel Hill households. The Food Pantry will welcome you and receive your food donations weekdays between 9am - 5pm. Baskets for food donations are also located in the parish office and in the tower entrance to the church. You may also make a financial contribution to the IFC to help our volunteers purchase any of the food items shown on today's shopping list. The Food Pantry currently needs corn muffin mix, cake mix, cereal, elbow macaroni (1lb.), juice, mayonnaise, sugar (2lb.), oil (1qt.), and cans of: chicken, collards, elbow macaroni, fruit, green beans, luncheon meat, peas, pinto beans, pork and beans, spaghetti sauce and tomatoes.

Solemn Evensong - Sept. 28

The Senior Choir will perform a solemn evensong for the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 7:00 pm in the church. The program will include music by Howells, Gardiner, Dering and Mulet. All are welcome!

Project 5000 Begins Today!

The parish drive to fill 500 boxes with food for hungry people in our community begins at the BBQ this afternoon. Watch for the card table where parishioners will be waiting to distribute boxes and lists of food items for us to purchase to fill these boxes. The project, inspired by Jesus' feeding of the 5,000, is designed to provide emergency food supplies for a family of four for two days, with a specific list of foods for this purpose. The cost to fill each box is between $20 - $25. Consider taking more than one box: for $100 you can fill at least four boxes. Boxes may be "adopted" by individuals, families, church school classes, book groups, committees, and others. Instructions and a list of foods to buy are stapled to each box. Boxes will be distributed through mid-October; filled boxes should be returned to the church on Sundays, where they will be collected at the circular drive in front of the chapel. We welcome help in staffing the distribution tables after Sunday services or delivering the filled boxes to the IFC Food Pantry. To help, get in touch with Alice Cotten (acotten@email.unc.edu).

Una Noche HondureƱa

Honduras night is coming soon! Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 11 for Honduras Night. Join the Global Mission Committee and the Honduras mission teams for an evening of learning and fellowship. We'll serve "platos tipicos" (a traditional Honduran dinner), share stories, look at photographs, and learn about the work that is taking place in Honduras, and back by popular demand will be a raffle of Honduran handicrafts and souvenirs. We'll be accepting donations to cover costs, and any additional proceeds will go to support the Global Mission Fund and the upcoming ECM trip to El Hogar in Honduras. Our parish is working to establish long-lasting and meaningful relationships with several ministries in Honduras, and we want you to be a part of it. Want more information? Visit our table in the dining hall on Sept. 30 and October 7 after the 9:00, 11:15, and 5:15 services, or at the Parish BBQ on Sept. 16; alternatively, you can contact Jackie Whitt ( whittje@email.unc.edu) or Margie Will (mwill@bellsouth.net) for more details. Hasta luego!

Intimacy with God
Through Prayer

When we slow down our fast paced lives and allow God to find us, an intimate knowledge of God can evolve. On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Spiritual Life Committee will present a Centering Prayer Workshop from 9:30 am until 4:00 pm at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Hillsborough. The Reverend Tom Ward will lead beginners and experienced practitioners in this method of prayer. Registration forms may be found in the Aug. and Sept. issues of Cross Roads and in the descriptive brochures located at the back of the church and chapel and on the dining room tract rack. A $25 fee includes lunch. On Oct. 7, Mr. Ward will preach at the 9:00 and 11:15 services. Space is limited, so register today to reserve your space.

Play for Pars Golf Tournament

Our parish's Play for Pars Golf Tournament is tomorrow. We still need golfers and there is still time to sign up. The tournament will be held at The Preserve at Jordan Lake. Proceeds from this tournament are a critical part of our funding to build Habitat for Humanity houses in Orange County. Registration begins at 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1:00 pm. The entry fee is $125 per person. Please join us as this is a great event and we always have a wonderful time. Contact Brian McRae at mcraebj@gmail.com.
