Today
Approaching Adolescence
Please join us in the library at 10:20 am to hear Dr. John Tisdale, a therapist and Methodist minister, present the second of a two-part program entitled, “Approaching Adolescence.” Don't worry if you missed last Sunday, or if your own child is a decade away from the teenage years. The presentation will focus on parents' own feelings about adolecence, how those feelings influence the way we parent and how we can approach adolescence (even if it is a long way off) in a more positive way.
Compline tonight at 9:30 pm
“Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is.” The ancient monastic service of Compline, the “completion” of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.
Episcopal Youth Community
EYC will meet at 1:30 this afternoon in the church parking lot. We will be driving to Camp Chestnut Ridge to do the Low Ropes Course. Please dress for climbing and wear sneakers. If you are interested and not on my list already, please email cparker@thechapelofthecross.org or call 960-7220 to see if there is still space. We will return to the church at 5:30 pm. EYC will return to its regular time and space on Sept. 30.

12:30 Social Hour

Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Please log onto http://groups.yahoo.com/group/COTCsocialhour to join the new Social Hour list-serve. From there you can keep up with the group calendar, learn about volunteer opportunities and help continue the 12:30 Social Hour tradition. Conversations Concerning the Blessing of Same-Gender Unions
The rector and the vestry will host a series of parish gatherings as part of the discernment process about whether to extend the congregation's pastoral care for gay couples by offering a formal blessing of same-gender unions. These sessions will include an educational segment as well as a discussion segment. The dates and times of the sessions are as follows: today at 8:15 am (following the 7:30 service); today at 12:45 pm (following the 11:15 service); next Sunday at 6:15 pm (following the 5:15 service); Sunday, Oct. 7 at 11:00 am at Carolina Meadows (following the 10:00 service) Every parishioner is invited to come to one of the hour-long sessions. The vestry respectfully asks that those wishing to contribute to the discussion do so in a constructive manner that will build up the Body of Christ and not be hurtful to those in the congregation who may have a different opinion on this issue. Light hors d'oeuvres will be available at the sessions conducted at the church. On Sunday, Oct. 14, at 10:20 am a gathering for parents will be offered, titled “Talking to Kids about Gay Unions.”

Stewardship Opportunities
Brick Campaign
The Alamance-Orange Prison Ministry is launching a 1,000 Bricks Campaign to build a worship center at the Orange Correctional Center to serve inmates and their families. They have already raised $120,000 and need to raise the remaining $100,000. The Department of Corrections provides no funding for this facility. You can help by buying a brick for $100 or contribute any amount to the parish's brick campaign. Your donation is tax deductible. A donation form is available in Crossroads. Members of the Social Ministry Committee will be outside the church in the next few weeks with brochures and donation forms. The article in this month's Crossroads will tell you more about the Brick Campaign and the Alamance - Orange Prison Ministry. To inquire further, contact Terry Johnston at 933-0097 or terry.johnston@ncmail.net
Fill a Project 5000 Food Box
Individuals, families, church school classes, book groups -- all these and more can help feed hungry people in our community in an easy, specific way. After Sunday services, pick up one or more empty boxes from tables outside and fill them with food from the list supplied. Return filled boxes to the church, and they will be delivered to the IFC Food Pantry. Each filled box will feed a family of four for two days, supplying emergency food to those who need it.
Countdown to Oct. 2
Ark Launch
Ark Launch
This year's Gift Ark campaign for Heifer International will conclude in just two weeks, with a celebration at the Blessing of the Animals service on Oct. 2. If you have not already, please select your puzzle piece, following the istructions on the display in the dining hall, which includes information on the Heifer Gift Ark; ark-shaped collection boxes for youths; colorful cards for gift giving in honor or memory of others; and the puzzle itself! The Micah Group reminds us that Heifer Project efforts address many of the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals), and our gifts to Heifer help us reach individual targets of 0.7 of 1% giving toward the MDGs, as encouraged by the diocese and denomination.
IFC Needs
Now more than ever IFC volunteers and staff need food donations. Household requests for food have risen by 26.5% since January. Last year 9,204 bags of groceries were distributed to Carrboro and Chapel Hill households. The Food Pantry will welcome you and receive your food donations weekdays between 9am - 5pm. Baskets for food donations are also located in the parish office and in the tower entrance to the church. You may also make a financial contribution to the IFC to help volunteers purchase needed food items. The Food Pantry currently needs corn muffin mix, cake mix, cereal, elbow macaroni (1lb.), juice, mayonnaise, sugar (2lb.), oil (1qt.), and cans of: chicken, collards, elbow macaroni, fruit, green beans, luncheon meat, peas, pinto beans, pork and beans, spaghetti sauce and tomatoes.

Una Noche HondureƱa
Honduras night is coming soon! Mark your calendars for Thursday, Oct. 11 for Honduras Night. Join the Global Mission Committee and the Honduras mission teams for an evening of learning and fellowship. We'll serve “platos tipicos” (a traditional Honduran dinner), share stories, look at photographs, and learn about the work that is taking place in Honduras, and back by popular demand will be a raffle of Honduran handicrafts and souvenirs. We'll be accepting donations to cover costs, and any additional proceeds will go to support the Global Mission Fund and the upcoming ECM trip to El Hogar in Honduras. Our parish is working to establish long-lasting and meaningful relationships with several ministries in Honduras, and we want you to be a part of it. Want more information? Visit our table in the dining hall on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 after the 9:00, 11:15, and 5:15 services. Alternatively, you can contact Jackie Whitt (623-3416, whittje@email.unc.edu) or Margie Will (929-0036, mwill@bellsouth.net) for more details. Hasta luego!
