Today
Welcome Tom Ward!
The Chapel of the Cross welcomes the Rev. Thomas Ward, Jr., retired Chaplain of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Mr. Ward will be preaching at the 9:00 and 11:15 services today.
Episcopal Youth Community New Orleans Mission Trip Presentation
Please join the New Orleans Mission Trip participants to hear about the places we saw, the people we met and the work we did during our time in New Orleans. We will be making a presentation of pictures and stories about our experience working in New Orleans in the chapel at 6:15 pm (following the 5:15 service) today. We look forward to sharing this experience with you!
Compline tonight at 9:30 pm
"Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is." The ancient monastic service of Compline, the "completion" of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.
Adult Education Today
Four adult education classes are offered today. Join Rev. Lee in the choir room for the second of four sessions entitled "Trying to Stand in a Fallen World: How a Christian Makes Choices That Matter." In the parlor, Godly Play storyteller, Susan Munn, will present "The Great Family Story" for adults. The Kindergarten and 1st Grade classes follow this curriculum. If you have never experienced Godly Play, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear the biblical story in a new way. The Middle High and Senior High Church School classes have introduced a new lectionary-based curriculum this year, Seasons of the Spirit. Join Gretchen Jordan in the library to experience today's lesson exactly as our youth are experiencing it. The Rev. Thomas Ward will facilitate a discussion about centering prayer in the Chapel.
Dinners for Eight - Deadline Today
Young adults in their 20's and 30's (roughly) are invited to sign up for Dinners For 8, a series of monthly supper groups for singles and couples. David will arrange all participants into the groups of eight, taking into account marital and child status. Registration forms are available online at http://www.thechapelofthecross.org/fellowship/dinnersforeight.html, and in paper in the parlor, the parish office, and the back of the chapel. More information: David Frazelle (church office), dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org. Registrations are due today and will open again in January.
THIS WEEK
Episcopal Campus Ministry
Welcome new and returning students. We are so very glad to have you and would love to greet you following the service. Undergraduates are invited to be a part of Episcopal Campus Ministry which meets every Tuesday night during the academic year. Join us for dinner and fellowship this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in our Campus Center. This Tuesday, Oct. 9 we will be discussing an episode of South Park and the interesting questions regarding faith it generates. On Tuesday Oct. 16 one of our student chaplains will be discussing her amazing trip to New Zealand this past spring. A discussion of the death penalty will follow on Oct. 23, and we will end the month with an All Hallow's Eve service on Oct. 30. We hope to see many of you there!
Global Missions Committee
Kwasa's bright-eyed children need scholarships for primary school, and San Patricio's smiling children need dental care. Our parish has committed itself to these children and their parish communities in South Africa and Honduras. The Global Missions Committee will meet tomorrow at 7:00 pm in the Rector's conference room. Please join us - or just visit! We need and welcome many hands.
Una Noche Hondurena
Honduras night is coming soon! Mark your calendars for this Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6:00 pm for Honduras Night. Join the Global Missions Committee and the Honduras mission teams for an evening of learning and fellowship. We'll serve "platos tipicos" (a traditional Honduran dinner), share stories, look at photographs, and learn about the work that is taking place in Honduras, and back by popular demand will be a raffle of Honduran handicrafts and souvenirs. We'll be accepting donations to cover costs, and any additional proceeds will go to support the Global Mission Fund and the upcoming ECM trip to El Hogar in Honduras. Want more information? Visit our table in the dining hall today after the 9:00, 11:15, and 5:15 services. Alternatively, you can contact Jackie Whitt (whittje@email.unc.edu) or Margie Will (mwill@bellsouth.net) for more details. Hasta luego!
Parish Notes
Thank you from Jerusalem
A thank you note has been received from the American Friends of the Diocese of Jerusalem for the donation made to the Ahli Hospital in Gaza and the Shufat Refugee Camp in Jerusalem by our Vacation Church School students. The children collected over $850, and an anonymous donor contributed the balance to total $1,000.00 This is the second year the VCS students have collected money for children's programs in Jerusalem. Thank you to all who made this such a generous gift.
1st Sunday Food Collection
Today marks the beginning of a new discipline in which the parish is invited to participate. During the 9:00 service, families are invited to bring non perishable food items to church, dropping in one of the two baskets at the main entrance. These baskets will be brought forward during the offertory. There will also be a basket at the playground for Chapel children to donate which will be brought into the 9:00 service and added to the other baskets. Someone has coined this new practice "Fish Sunday!" You may still bring food items any day or time and drop these in the containers at both entrances to the buildings.
Heifer Results
We are so pleased that to date over $3,200.00 has been received for Heifer Project International. While this is short of our "buy an ark" goal of $5,000.00, this is a remarkable and generous effort for a parish that is presently appealing for many good causes. Thank you to all who contributed. We will continue to receive donations. The puzzle can be filled in piece by piece with each $25.00 donation through the end of Oct. and cards and envelopes to give in honor or in memory of someone are on the credenza in the dining room. The final count will be dedicated at the 9:00 service on All Saints Sunday, Nov. 4.
Contribution Statements Mailed
Contribution statements for the first nine months (through Sept. 30) of 2007 were mailed on Friday, Oct. 5, to all those who made pledges to the Chapel of the Cross for 2007. Please check these statements for accuracy and contact the Parish Accountant, Debby Kulik, in the parish office if you find any discrepancies or have any questions. Note that these statements include all contributions recorded through Sept. 30. This includes all contributions placed in the offering plates during the services on that Sunday. It may not include contributions mailed at the end of September or left in the parish office over the last weekend in Sept., since these will not be processed until Oct. Note also that payments received in 2007 but credited to a prior or future year pledge are not reflected on these statements. In January, a different type of statement will be mailed to all contributors listing all gifts made during 2007, including those for prior or future years.
12:30 Social Hour
You are invited each week following the 11:15 Sunday morning service to enjoy food, fellowship and a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross with old-timers and newcomers alike. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Please log onto http://groups.yahoo.com/group/COTCsocialhour to join the new Social Hour list-serve. From there you can keep up with the group calendar, learn about volunteer opportunities and help continue the 12:30 Social Hour tradition. E-mail Anne Hoole (Hospitality Manager) at ahoole@thechapelofthecross.org if you have any questions or to find out more.
Project 5000 Report
Our drive to fill boxes with food for Project 5000 is going very well. Boxes will continue to be available this Sunday and next. Please return filled boxes to the church by the end of Oct. On Sundays they may be put on the circular stone wall in front of the chapel for delivery to the IFC. Thank you for your generous participation in feeding hungry people in this tangible way.
Emergency Procedures
Emergency procedure instructions for the parish buildings are posted by the alarm box located in the hallway by the parish office. If you have questions, please see Ron McGill, facilities manager, or call Clare Baum (call church office for number).
Stewardship Opportunities
Burmese Refugee Resettlement Progress
Our Burmese family is quickly adjusting to their new life. They have major appointments scheduled for each day this week. They had their intake meeting with LFS in Raleigh on Monday, their Social Security applications meeting on Tuesday. Wednesday they apply for school admissions. Thursday they have an appointment at Social Services. Today we will take the school-aged children shoe shopping as we are planning to have them in school by Friday. Grocery shopping is an almost daily activity -- finding foods that fit their palates and keeping the larder full for a family of eight. The list of needs located in the dining room is dwindling -- many thanks to so many of you who have helped with this. We will try to have more specific clothes sizes after our visit to the mall today. Rain gear/umbrellas is a definite must especially for the school children (Yes, we are being optimistic about the rain!) as they have a modest distance to go to the bus stop. A booster car seat is needed for our 10 year old as he is small in size. We welcome others who wish to become directly involved with the acculturation process of this delightful family. Those of us who have had this opportunity feel blessed. Monetary contributions are also greatly appreciated to pay for rent and utilities. Make checks payable to COTC with "Refugee Resettlement" in the memo.
Cook Team Needed
The Social Ministry Committee is starting a monthly cook team for Orange House, the AIDS Alliance House in Carrboro. We are planning to cook and share dinner with the residents around 5:00 pm on the second Thursday of each month and are scheduled to begin this Thursday, Oct. 11. If you are interested, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com. If you are interested but that date doesn’t work, let us know.
Mission Trip to Bay St. Louis
A group of parishes from North Carolina, called the Carolina Connection, are travelling to Bay St. Louis, MS over the Veteran's Day weekend. The group will leave Charlotte on Thursday, Nov. 8, and return on Tuesday, Nov. 13. This group works in conjunction with Mission on the Bay and Camp Coast Care. St. Matthew's in Hillsborough is one of the parishes who has joined this group. Social Ministry is interested in hearing from parishioners interested in joining this effort. Contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com for more information.
IFC Needs
Now more than ever IFC volunteers and staff need food donations. Baskets for food donations are also located in the parish office and in the tower entrance to the church. You may also make a financial contribution to the IFC to help volunteers purchase needed food items. The Food Pantry currently needs corn muffin mix, cake mix, cereal, elbow macaroni (1lb.), juice, mayonnaise, sugar (2lb.), oil (1qt.), and cans of: chicken, collards, elbow macaroni, fruit, green beans, luncheon meat, peas, pinto beans, pork and beans, spaghetti sauce and tomatoes.

Reading with a View to Spirituality
To prepare for Advent, come join us for reflection upon Thomas Merton's Thoughts on Solitude on Saturday, Nov. 3, 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm in the parish library. Bring a bag lunch if you would like. Contact Raquel Goldberg at (call church office for number) if you have any questions.
IFC Annual Meeting
All are invited to the annual meeting of the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service at the Friday Center on Thursday, Oct. 25, beginning with a reception at 5:30 pm and continuing with a dinner and program at 6:00 pm. The theme of the meeting is "Just a lookin' for a home," and the program will feature a panel discussion including Chapel Hill mayor Kevin Foy and IFC Board President Ann Henley. RSVP to the IFC at 929-6380, ext. 15 or rsvp@ifcmailbox.org.
Community Notes
Orange County Sponsoring Committee
Would you like to consider participation in an opportunity to affect positive change on issues that affect many in this community? The Orange County Sponsoring Committee is an effort to build a broad-based organization with the power to take collective action in the name of justice and the common good. The potential members of the new organization are religious congregations, schools, unions and community and civic organizations in Orange County. The Sponsoring Committee has hired national community organizers to assist them in their effort to construct a broad-based, multi-racial, multi-faith, non-partisan organization with power to affect positive change within the community. This group will provide a forum to identify, discuss and resolve issues that impact our community. Members of the Social Ministry Committee at Chapel of the Cross have attended many of these meetings and have been involved since the beginning of this group. The Sponsoring Group is at a point to recruit and train individuals from its member organizations. Training will take place the first four Tuesdays in October. If you would like to attend or learn more about the Orange County Sponsoring Committee, contact Terry Johnston.
Guardian Ad Litem Program of Durham County
If you live in Durham County and would be interested in serving as a court appointed advocate for a child who has been identified as abused or neglected and is under either the physical and/or legal care of Department of Social Services, consider becoming a guardian ad litem. Training and supervision are provided. To learn more, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com. Orange County also operates a guardian ad litem program and would welcome volunteers.
The Advocate
An Episcopal Mission sponsored by the Chapel of the Cross, invites one and all to join in the liturgy Sundays at 5:00 pm Holy Eucharist at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, on the corner of Mason Farm Road and Purefoy Road. For more information, see: www.ouradvocate.org <http://www.ouradvocate.org>.
