Adult Education This Week

Parent Gathering: Talking with Kids about Gay Unions - Library

Trying to Stand in a Fallen World: How a Christian Makes Choices That Matter

Today

Talking to Kids About Gay Unions

During the recent years of dialogue and discernment concerning the blessings of gay unions, children may have developed their own questions about same-sex relationships. Please join us in the library at 10:20 this morning for a round-table discussion on how to answer kids' questions and begin conversations about gay unions.

Episcopal Youth Community

Halloween is creeping up on us! It is time to begin planning for Carnifall. Every year EYC hosts the children of the parish for games and fun! We will be coming up with games and splitting into teams for planning. We invite all youth grades 6 - 8 and 9 - 12 to join us for fun, fellowship, and food on Sunday evening from 5:30 - 7:30 pm in the basement.

Compline tonight at 9:30 pm

"Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is." The ancient monastic service of Compline, the "completion" of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.

THIS WEEK

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Welcome new and returning students. We are so very glad to have you and would love to greet you following the service. Undergraduates are invited to be a part of Episcopal Campus Ministry which meets every Tuesday night during the academic year. Join us for dinner and fellowship this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in our Campus Center. This Tuesday, Oct. 16 one of our student chaplains will be discussing her amazing trip to New Zealand this past spring. A discussion of the death penalty will follow on Oct. 23, and we will end the month with an All Hallow's Eve service on Oct. 30. We hope to see many of you there!

Parish Notes

Annual Giving Campaign

The Annual Giving Campaign for 2008 has now begun. Pledge packets were mailed this past week. If you did not receive one, please notify the parish office. Beginning this week, parish volunteers will be calling each household (unless you have already returned your pledge) to make sure you have received your packet and to see if you have any questions or concerns. This is part of an effort to ensure good communication and to make this a communal, not simply an individual, response. Please answer the phone when you are called and be hospitable to your caller! We are all being faithful stewards and supporting the ministry of this parish together.

Children's Processional for All Saints

The tradition of the children's processional continues at the 9:00 service on Sunday Nov. 4. All children are encouraged to choose a saint to research, make a costume or a shield depicting the saint's life and join in a processional at the 9:00 service. All participants will meet in the dining room at 8:50 am. Children will sit in the nave area through the baptisms and then return to the pew with their families. Parents are reminded to save a seat for their child. There will be a processional in Children's Chapel, too. If you have a child in Children's Chapel whom you want to process at the 9:00 service, you will need to take them from the service into the chapel and sign them in with Joy Gattis at the time of dismissal.

Eat In to Help Out

The Wednesday Pot Luck will join Episcopalians throughout the country next week as we "Eat In to Help Out." Instead of spending money on restaurant food, participants are encouraged to donate money they might have spent eating out to help out people living in poverty. Any money collected will be donated to Heifer International, an organization working to meet the Millennium Development Goals.

Bach's Lunch

The semi-annual series of organ recitals known as Bach's Lunch will begin again next Tuesday at 12:15 in the church with a concert by our very own Dr. Quinn. The recital is free and open to the public.

Parish Workday

The Buildings and Grounds Committee has scheduled a fall parish workday for Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon. All interested parishioners are invited to help committee members with some cleaning and small repairs as directed by our facilities manager, Ron McGill. For further information, contact Ron, or committee chair, Clare Baum (call church office for number).

Casseroles and Soups are Needed

The Good Samaritan Guild is hoping to replenish our freezer with soups and casseroles which are delivered to parishioners at a time of need. Please freeze in small portions, label the ingredients and date your dish. These can go into the freezer in the dishwasher room. If you have questions or if you or someone you know is in need of food, please contact the parish office.

Burmese Refugee Resettlement Needs

Our Burmese family continues to settle into life in North Carolina. The five oldest children have started school: one at Franklin Porter Graham, two at Culbreth Middle School and two at Carrboro High School. The Social Ministry Committee again wants to thank the many parishioners who have contributed to furnishing their apartment. However, our greatest need at the moment is monetary! The committee has seriously depleted its budget with expenses for school supplies, calculators, gym clothes, school shoes, as well as rent, utilities and food for eight (including three teenagers)! We would really appreciate any financial assistance you can give to help with the needs of this delightful family. Make checks payable to the Chapel of the Cross with the memo line indicating "Refugee Resettlement Project." For more information, contact Barbara Tremblay or Gale Gilchrist (please call the church office for numbers).

Thank you from Jerusalem

A thank you note has been received from the American Friends of the Diocese of Jerusalem for the donation made to the Ahli Hospital in Gaza and the Shufat Refugee Camp in Jerusalem by our Vacation Church School students. The children collected over $850, and an anonymous donor contributed the balance to total $1,000.00 This is the second year the VCS students have collected money for children's programs in Jerusalem. Thank you to all who made this such a generous gift.

Heifer Results

We are so pleased that to date over $3,200.00 has been received for Heifer Project International. While this is short of our "buy an ark" goal of $5,000.00, this is a remarkable and generous effort for a parish that is presently appealing for many good causes. Thank you to all who contributed. We will continue to receive donations. The puzzle can be filled in piece by piece with each $25.00 donation through the end of Oct. and cards and envelopes to give in honor or in memory of someone are on the credenza in the dining room. The final count will be dedicated at the 9:00 service on All Saints Sunday, Nov. 4.

Play for Pars Golf Tournament Update

Monday, September 17, was a glorious day for golf and supporting Habitat. Seventy-one golfers, including Stephen Elkins-Williams and Vicky and David Jamieson-Drake, convened at The Preserve at Jordan Lake to participate in the seventh annual UNC Student - Chapel of the Cross Habitat Partnership golf tournament. The Reverend Peter Thomas from the Church of the Holy Family also joined us with a foursome. This event is a major source of funding for our parish's Habitat Partnership. Contributions of support to the tournament are still being accepted, and we continue to encourage you to show your support for Habitat. Receipts to date are just over $16,500, and the cost to our partnership to build a house is $35,000. The golf steering committee would like to thank all those who have contributed to the tournament with their generous donations of time, effort, and money.

Project 5000 Update

We have distributed about 350 empty boxes; around 150 remain and may be picked up this Sunday and next. If you have filled one box, consider taking another, perhaps one for each family member. (Boxes have been "adopted" by households, Bible study groups, even yoga classes!) The cost to fill a box with food from the list attached is $20 - $25. Filled boxes should be returned to the church by Oct. 28 and, on Sundays, placed on the circular stone wall in front of the chapel. Thank you for participating in this project to supply emergency food to hungry people.

Emergency Procedures

Emergency procedure instructions for the parish buildings are posted by the alarm box located in the hallway by the parish office. If you have questions, please see Ron McGill, facilities manager, or call Clare Baum (call church office for number).

Stewardship Opportunities

Project Homeless Connect

Volunteers are needed for a one-day event hosted by the Town of Chapel Hill to serve homeless people by connecting them with needed services. The event will be held at Hargraves Community Center from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on Oct. 25. Needs are for greeters, interviewers, escorts for homeless guests during the event, parking attendants, and setting up and cleaning up; financial contributions are also welcome. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Meredith Costa, mcosta@hiddenvoices.org.

Cook Team Needed

The Social Ministry Committee is starting a monthly cook team for Orange House, the AIDS Alliance House in Carrboro. We are planning to cook and share dinner with the residents around 5:00 pm on the second Thursday of each month. If you are interested, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com.

Potential Mission Trip to Gulf Coast

There is an opportunity for parishioners at Chapel of the Cross to join with a group from St. Matthews in Hillsborough, Holy Comforter in Charlotte and several other churches in North Carolina to travel to Bay St. Louis on Nov. 7 - 12 to work with Mission on the Bay, housed at Christ Episcopal Church there. The group stays in Quonset huts which are on Christ Church property. The huts are equipped with mattresses, heating and a-c. A shower hut is also available. Additionally three meals a day are provided. Cost, minus travel, is $20 day plus $10 for a t-shirt. This group, the Carolina Connection, has been making two or three trips a year since 2006. They go Veteran's Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend and sometimes on Martin Luther King weekend. Their youth have gone for mission trips there as well. The plan would be for parishioners from this area to travel to Charlotte on Wednesday evening where they will be housed by parishioners there. The group would then travel on Thursday by car and bus to Bay St. Louis, arriving about 5pm Thursday. They receive work orders and equipment from Katrina Relief and Christ Church. An advance team will be reviewing work requests to make the best use of the group's time. Parishioners will return to Chapel Hill on Tuesday night, leaving MS. early that morning. Volunteers with skills in carpentry, plumbing, electricity etc are a wonderful addition but there are also tasks for those without those special skills. If you are interested in this Nov. trip, please contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com or by phone (call church office for number) as soon as possible. Older teens can accompany parents if interested. If you cannot make this trip but are interested in one in January or May, please let her know this as well. To work out transportation, you need to communicate your interest by Monday, Oct. 22. At that point we will determine if there is sufficient interest to move forward on this trip.

IFC Needs

Now more than ever IFC volunteers and staff need food donations. Baskets for food donations are also located in the parish office and in the tower entrance to the church. You may also make a financial contribution to the IFC to help volunteers purchase needed food items. The Food Pantry currently needs corn muffin mix, cake mix, cereal, elbow macaroni (1lb.), juice, mayonnaise, sugar (2lb.), oil (1qt.), and cans of: chicken, collards, elbow macaroni, fruit, green beans, luncheon meat, peas, pinto beans, pork and beans, spaghetti sauce and tomatoes.

To prepare for Advent, come join us for reflection upon Thomas Merton's Thoughts on Solitude on Saturday, Nov. 3, 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm in the parish library. Bring a bag lunch if you would like. Contact Raquel Goldberg at (call church office for number) if you have any questions.

IFC Annual Meeting

All are invited to the annual meeting of the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service at the Friday Center on Thursday, Oct. 25, beginning with a reception at 5:30 pm and continuing with a dinner and program at 6:00 pm. The theme of the meeting is "Just a lookin' for a home," and the program will feature a panel discussion including Chapel Hill mayor Kevin Foy and IFC Board President Ann Henley. RSVP by Oct. 18 to the IFC at 929-6380, ext. 15 or rsvp@ifcmailbox.org.

Community Notes

Orange County Sponsoring Committee

Would you like to consider participation in an opportunity to affect positive change on issues that affect many in this community? The Orange County Sponsoring Committee is an effort to build a broad-based organization with the power to take collective action in the name of justice and the common good. The potential members of the new organization are religious congregations, schools, unions and community and civic organizations in Orange County. The Sponsoring Committee has hired national community organizers to assist them in their effort to construct a broad-based, multi-racial, multi-faith, non-partisan organization with power to affect positive change within the community. This group will provide a forum to identify, discuss and resolve issues that impact our community. Members of the Social Ministry Committee at Chapel of the Cross have attended many of these meetings and have been involved since the beginning of this group. The Sponsoring Group is at a point to recruit and train individuals from its member organizations. Training will take place the first four Tuesdays in October. If you would like to attend or learn more about the Orange County Sponsoring Committee, contact Terry Johnston.

Guardian Ad Litem Program of Durham County

If you live in Durham County and would be interested in serving as a court appointed advocate for a child who has been identified as abused or neglected and is under either the physical and/or legal care of Department of Social Services, consider becoming a guardian ad litem. Training and supervision are provided. To learn more, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com. Orange County also operates a guardian ad litem program and would welcome volunteers.

The Advocate

An Episcopal Mission sponsored by the Chapel of the Cross, invites one and all to join in the liturgy Sundays at 5:00 pm Holy Eucharist at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, on the corner of Mason Farm Road and Purefoy Road. For more information, see: www.ouradvocate.org http://www.ouradvocate.org.

The Environmental Stewardship Committee Green Tip:

Fall is for planting: choose plants that provide food for birds, butterflies and bees.
