Heifer Gift Ark
We have reached our goal of $5,000.00! An ark of animals will be purchased for families around the world thanks to the generous giving of this parish. Three years in a row is a remarkable gift of life to those who have such desperate needs. This project goes a long way in our fulfillment of 0.7% giving towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, endorsed by the national church as the number 1 mission priority. It is not too late to donate additional monies and add more animals to the already filled ark. Make a check to Chapel of the Cross with "Heifer" in the memo line, and return it to the office no later than Oct. 31. We will dedicate the ark gift on Sunday, Nov. 4 during the 9:00 service.
Episcopal Youth Community
Next week is Carnifall! This week we will be working with small groups to plan our games and make signs. Please be here to help make this year's a great success. We will meet in the basement and end up in the dining room for dinner. EYC meets most weeks from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. All sixth through twelfth graders are invited to participate.
Compline tonight at 9:30 pm
"Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is." The ancient monastic service of Compline, the "completion" of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.
THIS WEEK
Episcopal Campus Ministry
Welcome students. We are so very glad to have you and would love to greet you following the service. Undergraduates are invited to be a part of Episcopal Campus Ministry which meets every Tuesday night during the academic year. Join us for dinner and fellowship this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in our Campus Center. This Tuesday, Oct. 23 we will have a discussion of the death penalty. Next week we will end the month with an All Hallow's Eve service. We hope to see many of you there!
NEXT WEEK
If I Had a Million Dollars
In the days of lotteries, Las Vegas, The Power of Ten and unexpected inheritance, have you ever dreamed about what you would do if you actually had newfound wealth? Next Sunday, Oct. 28, our adult education program will convene in the chapel. This provocative presentation might help you consider some options for your fantasies and realities of being a $1,000,000 winner. The program will begin with a Chapel of the Cross rendition of the newest TV game show, Power of Ten. While Drew Carey won't be with us to MC, we encourage you to come and meet our contestant and learn a few things as you play along.
Carnifall
Episcopal Youth Community will be hosting CARNIFALL next Sunday from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm in the basement. Wear your costume and join us for tricks and treats. There will be a haunted house, face painting, games and treats. Many activities will be directed to the preschool set. Others will be great for elementary school children. These events are free - there is a suggested donation of canned goods.
Parish Notes
Names for All Saints' Day
Please submit to the parish office names of those recently deceased you would like added to the bulletin for the All Saints' Day Solemn Eucharist on Thursday, Nov. 1. Deadline for submission is Sunday, Oct. 28.
Free Parking!
The church has purchased tokens for parking in the Morehead and the Rosemary town lots for individuals attending church services, business or meetings at any time Monday-Friday, including those attending the Sunday 5:15 service. These tokens are available in the parish office from one of the administrative staff. If there is a scheduled meeting after office hours, the person convening or chairing the meeting may obtain a sufficient number of tokens for anticipated attendees from the administrative staff prior to the meeting. The Morehead lot is free until 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday; the town lot is free all day Sunday. For the Sunday 5:15 service, the service coordinator should obtain tokens. Please note that the Morehead tokens are for one (1) hour each and the town lot tokens are for 1/2 hour each. Be sure to obtain an adequate number of tokens to cover the total time you are parked. Please take only the number of tokens needed and return unneeded ones as the church is paying for the tokens.
InterFaith Council seeking a new cook team
IFC has an evening slot to begin a new cook team. The 4th Tuesday evening is needing a new team and IFC has asked if Chapel of the Cross parishioners are interested in adopting that additional meal. We presently have a team on the 4th Tuesday lunch and 3rd Friday dinner. If you are interested in joining an IFC cook team, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com.
Parish Visitors
Parish Visitors will meet at 2:00 pm on Thursday, Nov. 1 in the Library. All parishioners are welcome to attend and learn more about this important ministry to our shut-in members. For more information, contact Bob Comey (please call church office for Bob's number).
Food Delivery Opportunity
Do you have a car and about thirty minutes a week to give to a good cause on a rotating basis? That's about what it takes to pick up food from our parish food donation baskets and deliver it to the IFC Food Pantry on Main Street in Carrboro. Parishioners are generous, donating several baskets of food each week, food that is welcomed and appreciated at the IFC. If you'd like to help in this enjoyable delivery task, get in touch with Alice Cotten at acotten@email.unc.edu, or call the church office for her number.
Attention Graduate and Professional Students
We have joined our brethren at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in a joint mission to provide a place for fellowship and discussion for graduate and professional students. We have created a Listserv and are offering a variety of activities. Every Sunday, we get together after Compline, which is at 9:30 pm, for a little "God on Tap" at Linda's. We are also having a Bible discussion on Tuesday, Oct. 30. (Dessert will be provided!) If you are interested in this or any other activities, please e-mail Jimmy Satterwhite at jimmysa@alumni.unc.edu.
Annual Giving News
The parish has embraced this fall's campaign with 143 pledges totaling $368,103 received before our volunteers started making their phone calls last Tuesday! Your prompt response will enable the vestry to create a realistic budget for 2008. If you did not receive a pledge packet, there are more where sermons are available (dining room and in the back of the chapel and the church). The ingathering will be on Sunday, Nov. 25.
Children's Processional for All Saints
The tradition of the children's processional continues at the 9:00 service on Sunday Nov. 4. All children are encouraged to choose a saint to research, make a costume or a shield depicting the saint's life and join in a processional at the 9:00 service. All participants will meet in the dining room at 8:50 am. Children will sit in the nave area through the baptisms and then return to the pew with their families. Parents are reminded to save a seat for their child. There will be a processional in Children's Chapel, too. If you have a child in Children's Chapel whom you want to process at the 9:00 service, you will need to take them from the service into the chapel and sign them in with Joy Gattis at the time of dismissal.
A Burning Need for Wood
We have the chain saws, the axes and the splitters, and the able bodies. But we need some seasoned hardwood to cut and deliver for those in our community who need it for heating fuel this winter. If you have some wood on your property that you'd like to have removed, or know where there is a supply that we can tap into, please let us know. We will send a crew to the site and harvest the wood. The preference is a site that will give a good-sized crew a full morning's work. Contact David Brown weekdays at david_brown@unc.edu or call the church office for his phone number.
Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross
The Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross (PCC), an outreach mission of the Chapel of the Cross, operates here at the church Monday-Friday from 8:15 am until 12:15pm, year round. We serve 2, 3 and 4 year old children, 50% of whom are parishioners.
We know the parking lot can be a zoo during our pick-up and drop-off times! Look for PCC volunteers (in the orange traffic vest!) each morning and afternoon helping to facilitate speedy and safe pick-up and drop-off. If you have questions about the preschool, please contact PCC Board President Perri Kersh (perri@neat-freak.com) or our Director, Laura Gelblum (preschool@thechapelofthecross.org).
Project 5000
Today is the last day to pick up empty boxes to fill with food for the IFC. After the 9 am and 11:15 am services, boxes will be available outside in front of the chapel; at other times, boxes may be picked up from a table in the dining room. On Sunday mornings, return filled boxes to the circular stone wall in front of the chapel. At other times, please place filled boxes under the bench in the hall across from the parish office. Please return filled boxes by the end of October. As of Oct. 14, we have delivered about 100 filled boxes to the IFC, supplying much needed emergency food to families who need it. Thank you for participating!
Bach's Lunch
The semi-annual series of organ recitals known as Bach's Lunch will begin again this Tuesday at 12:15 in the church with a concert by our very own Dr. Quinn. The recital is free and open to the public.
Parish Workday
The Buildings and Grounds Committee has scheduled a fall parish workday for Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon. All interested parishioners are invited to help committee members with some cleaning and small repairs as directed by our facilities manager, Ron McGill. For further information, contact Ron, or committee chair, Clare Baum (call church office for number).
Casseroles and Soups are Needed
The Good Samaritan Guild is hoping to replenish our freezer with soups and casseroles which are delivered to parishioners at a time of need. Please freeze in small portions, label the ingredients and date your dish. These can go into the freezer in the dishwasher room. If you have questions or if you or someone you know is in need of food, please contact the parish office.
Burmese Refugee Resettlement Needs
We continue to be grateful to parishioners for their quick and generous responses to the needs of our new family. The greatest need this week is clothing for the five school-aged children. Their American sizes and genders are now posted in the dining room. Please send only gently used clothing for cool weather. Monetary contributions for purchases of underwear and to supplement their wardrobes are greatly appreciated. Please make checks payable to The Chapel of the Cross with 'Refugee Resettlement' written in the memo. We are also looking for a very minimal computer stand. An excellent web site explaining who the Karen people are, the process for becoming refugees, cultural customs, their refugee camps, why and how they came to be - is most informative: www.karenkonnection.org/Resources.php3. Our last two resettlements have been families of Karen ethnicity. Please contact Barbara Tremblay or Gale Gilchrist for information.
Emergency Procedures
Emergency procedure instructions for the parish buildings are posted by the alarm box located in the hallway by the parish office. If you have questions, please see Ron McGill, facilities manager, or call Clare Baum (call church office for number).
