Adult Education This Week

If I Had a Million Dollars

In the days of lotteries, Las Vegas, The Power of Ten and unexpected inheritance, have you ever dreamed about what you would do if you actually had newfound wealth? Today our one adult education program will convene in the chapel. This provocative presentation might help you consider some options for your fantasies and realities of being a $1,000,000 winner. The program will begin with a Chapel of the Cross rendition of the newest TV game show, Power of Ten. While Drew Carey won't be with us to MC, we encourage you to come and meet our contestant and learn a few things as you play along.

Today

12:30 Social Hour

You are invited each week following the 11:15 Sunday morning service to enjoy food, fellowship and a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross with old-timers and newcomers alike. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers, and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Volunteers are needed to bring food to share and to man one of three 'shifts' during the morning that make the Social Hour a success. All volunteers are encouraged to ask a friend (possibly someone new to the Social Hour) to help share the duties signed up for each week. Find out more about the volunteer positions posted in the Church Kitchen. Choose a date you can volunteer and enter your volunteer position choice on the Social Hour CALENDAR posted in the Church Kitchen. Please contact Anne Hoole via e-mail at ahoole@thechapelofthecross.org to learn about volunteer opportunities and help continue the 12:30 Social Hour tradition.

Heifer Gift Ark

We have reached our goal of $5,000.00! An ark of animals will be purchased for families around the world thanks to the generous giving of this parish. Three years in a row is a remarkable gift of life to those who have such desperate needs. This project goes a long way in our fulfillment of 0.7% giving towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, endorsed by the national church as the number 1 mission priority. It is not too late to donate additional monies and add more animals to the already filled ark. Make a check to Chapel of the Cross with "Heifer" in the memo line, and return it to the office no later than Oct. 31. We will dedicate the ark gift on Sunday, Nov. 4 during the 9:00 service.

Episcopal Youth Community

CARNIFALL is tonight from 5:30-7:30 pm in the basement of the church!!! Every year EYC hosts a Fall Carnival for the children of the church. Please wear your costume and join us for face painting, games, and treats! There will be a haunted house for the very brave and ribbons for great costumes! Please bring canned goods to donate to the InterFaith Council Food Pantry. EYC youth participating in setting up Carnifall please be at the church early! Your arrival time has been emailed to you. If you have any questions please email Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org.

Compline tonight at 9:30 pm

"Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is." The ancient monastic service of Compline, the "completion" of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.

THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS

All Saints' Day

All Saints' Day will be celebrated this Thursday, Nov. 1 with a service of Holy Eucharist in the chapel at 5:15 and a solemn Eucharist in the church at 8:00 pm. The Rev. Jo Wells, head of Anglican Studies at Duke Divinity School, will be the preacher. Marking the centennial of the birth of Parisian organist and composer Jean Langlais, his Messe Solemnelle will be sung on the mass setting at 8:00. Other music will include "A Song for Athene" by John Tavener and Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor by J. S. Bach.

Please submit to the parish office names of those recently deceased you would like added to the bulletin for the All Saints' Day Solemn Eucharist on Thursday, Nov. 1. Deadline for submission is today.

All Saints' Sunday

On Nov. 4, The Sunday following All Saints' Day, the All Saints' Day readings and hymns will be used for the 9:00 service, which will include baptisms and children dressing as specific saints. The 7:30, 11:15, and 5:15 services will utilize the readings for Proper 26 (the Sunday closest to Nov. 2).

Children's Procession for All Saints

The tradition of the children's procession continues at the 9:00 service next Sunday, Nov. 4. All children are encouraged to choose a saint to research, make a costume or a shield depicting the saint's life and join in a procession at the 9:00 service. All participants will meet in the dining room at 8:50 am. Children will sit in the nave area through the baptisms and then return to the pew with their families. Parents are reminded to save a seat for their child. There will be a procession in Children's Chapel, too. If you have a child in Children's Chapel who wants to process at the 9:00 service, take the child from the service into the chapel and sign in with Joy Gattis at the time of dismissal.

Parish Notes

Project 5000 Food Boxes Due

Over the past month we have delivered to the IFC 150 boxes filled with emergency food supplies donated by parishioners. Thank you! If you have not yet had a chance to fill your boxes, please do so as soon as possible and return them to the church. Boxes returned this morning may be placed on the stone wall in front of the chapel. After this morning, please place filled boxes under the bench in the hall across from the parish office.

Annual Giving News

Thank you for your enthusiastic support! Pledges received to date have increased to 242 for $588,826 with the majority showing an increase over the amount pledged in 2007. Pledge packets were sent ten days earlier this year which has contributed to our being significantly ahead of last year at this time. If you regularly participate at the Chapel of the Cross and have not yet pledged for 2008, we invite you to do so. Extra pledge packets can be found in the dining room and in the back of the church and chapel.

Gluten-Free Wafers

The clergy and altar guild are willing to have gluten-free wafers available for those who need them at communion. Before providing them, however, they need to know if these would be helpful to anyone. Please speak to or leave a message for one of the clergy if gluten-free wafers are necessary for you.

Free Parking!

The church has purchased tokens for parking in the Morehead and the Rosemary town lots for individuals attending church services, business or meetings at any time Monday-Friday, including those attending the Sunday 5:15 service. These tokens are available in the parish office from one of the administrative staff. If there is a scheduled meeting after office hours, the person convening or chairing the meeting may obtain a sufficient number of tokens for anticipated attendees from the administrative staff prior to the meeting. The Morehead lot is free until 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday; the town lot is free all day Sunday. For the Sunday 5:15 service, the service coordinator should obtain tokens. Please note that the Morehead tokens are for one (1) hour each and the town lot tokens are for 1/2 hour each. Be sure to obtain an adequate number of tokens to cover the total time you are parked. Please take only the number of tokens needed and return unneeded ones as the church is paying for the tokens.

Attention Graduate and Professional Students

We have joined our brethren at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in a joint mission to provide a place for fellowship and discussion for graduate and professional students. We have created a Listserv and are offering a variety of activities. Every Sunday, we get together after Compline, which is at 9:30 pm, for a little "God on Tap" at Linda's. We are also having a Bible discussion on Tuesday, Oct. 30. (Dessert will be provided!) If you are interested in this or any other activities, please e-mail Jimmy Satterwhite at jimmysa@alumni.unc.edu.

Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross

The Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross (PCC), an outreach mission of the Chapel of the Cross, operates here at the church Monday-Friday from 8:15 am until 12:15pm, year round. We serve 2, 3 and 4 year old children, 50% of whom are parishioners.

We know the parking lot can be a zoo during our pick-up and drop-off times! Look for PCC volunteers (in the orange traffic vest!) each morning and afternoon helping to facilitate speedy and safe pick-up and drop-off. If you have questions about the preschool, please contact PCC Board President Perri Kersh (perri@neat-freak.com) or our Director, Laura Gelblum (preschool@thechapelofthecross.org).

Casseroles and Soups are Needed

The Good Samaritan Guild is hoping to replenish our freezer with soups and casseroles which are delivered to parishioners at a time of need. Please freeze in small portions, label the ingredients and date your dish. These can go into the freezer in the dishwasher room. If you have questions or if you or someone you know is in need of food, please contact the parish office.

Emergency Procedures

Emergency procedure instructions for the parish buildings are posted by the alarm box located in the hallway by the parish office. If you have questions, please see Ron McGill, facilities manager, or call Clare Baum (call church office for number).

Stewardship Opportunities

Household Furnishings Needed

Two new Oxford houses are being set up to serve residents of Orange and Durham County and they are urgently seeking household furnishings such as mattresses, dressers, lamps, sheets, blankets and toiletries. Oxford Houses are a nationwide organization that provide an affordable, alcohol and drug free environment for individuals recovering from alcoholism and drug abuse. Each house is democratically self-run by the members, is financially self-supporting and responsible for all household expenses and is drug and alcohol free. This program provides a wonderful bridge for recovering individuals being discharged from intensive drug and alcohol programs or prison incarceration. Larger items can be picked up at your home. Smaller items can be brought to church. Contact Paula Harrington, Special Project Coordinator for Oxford Houses in North Carolina, directly (Call church office for number) or pharring@med.unc.edu. You may contact Peggy Pratt, Social Ministry Chair, (call church for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com if you have other questions.

InterFaith Council seeking a new cook team

IFC has an evening slot to begin a new cook team. The 4th Tuesday evening is needing a new team and IFC has asked if Chapel of the Cross parishioners are interested in adopting that additional meal. We presently have a team on the 4th Tuesday lunch and 3rd Friday dinner. If you are interested in joining an IFC cook team, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com.

Food Delivery Opportunity

Do you have a car and about thirty minutes a week to give to a good cause on a rotating basis? That's about what it takes to pick up food from our parish food donation baskets and deliver it to the IFC Food Pantry on Main Street in Carrboro. Parishioners are generous, donating several baskets of food each week, food that is welcomed and appreciated at the IFC. If you'd like to help in this enjoyable delivery task, get in touch with Alice Cotten at acotten@email.unc.edu, or call the church office for her number.

A Burning Need for Wood

We have the chain saws, the axes and the splitters, and the able bodies. But we need some seasoned hardwood to cut and deliver for those in our community who need it for heating fuel this winter. If you have some wood on your property that you'd like to have removed, or know where there is a supply that we can tap into, please let us know. We will send a crew to the site and harvest the wood. The preference is a site that will give a good-sized crew a full morning's work. Contact David Brown at david_brown@unc.edu or call the church office for his phone number.

Help Needed

A Chapel of the Cross parishioner has passed on a request from his child's teacher asking for help for a young second grade student at Scroggs Elementary whose family lost everything in the recent apartment fire. The boy needs clothes and shoes. Shoe size is 4 and his clothes are 8-10 or medium. He also lost all his books, toys and games. Gift cards (Target, Wal-Mart) would also be welcome. Please bring items to the office - there will be a collection box there.

Cook Team Needed

The Social Ministry Committee is starting a monthly cook team for Orange House, the AIDS Alliance House in Carrboro. We are planning to cook and share dinner with the residents around 5:00 pm on the second Thursday of each month. If you are interested, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com.
