Creating Your Own Sacred Space

Today

Church School

Church School is offered most Sundays, September through mid-May for 2 year olds through adults. The classes and their locations are posted around the building and on the bulletin boards in the dining room. Church School is from 10:20 am to 11:05 am. Registration forms are available for parents of children and youth to complete. New students are welcome at any time during the year.

Adult Education Today

Join our rector in the chapel this morning at 10:20. He will address questions which have already been submitted and open the floor to questions. Next Sunday, the adult class will be on preparing for Advent and creating a sacred space in your home. David Frazelle, Gretchen Jordan, Nancy Tunnessen and Lila Wolff will lead. Parishioners are encouraged to bring photos and information about their own sacred spaces and ways of observing this holy season.

12:30 Social Hour

You are invited each week following the 11:15 Sunday morning service to enjoy food, fellowship and a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross with old-timers and newcomers alike. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Volunteers are needed to bring food to share. Food should be ready to serve. Food suggestions include such savory and sweet items as: cheese & crackers; chips & dip; crudite platter; sandwiches; fruit; cakes; cookies; light liquid refreshment is also welcome. Please sign up for a week to be a food provider on the calendar posted in the kitchen. LABEL your food with 12:30 SOCIAL HOUR, mark it with the date and deliver your food to the kitchen just before the 11:15 Sunday morning service.

Episcopal Youth Community

Junior EYC (6-8 grades) will be meeting from 5:30 - 7:30 pm in the basement tonight. We will be going on a Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt. Dress to be outside! Senior EYC (9-12 grades) will not be meeting tonight. We are still catching up on rest following the Lock-in! There will not be EYC on Nov. 25! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions.

Compline Tonight at 9:30 pm

"Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is." The ancient monastic service of Compline, the "completion" of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.

This Week

Bach's Lunch

The semi-annual series of organ recitals known as Bach's Lunch will conclude this Tuesday at 12:15 pm in the church with a concert by Chris Leggett of University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. The recital is free and open to the public.

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Welcome students. We are so very glad to have you and would love to greet you following the service. Undergraduates are invited to be a part of Episcopal Campus Ministry which meets every Tuesday night during the academic year. Join us for dinner and fellowship this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in our Campus Center.

Announcements

Pottery Advent Wreaths for Sale

Area potter, Sarah Howe, is making pottery Advent wreaths which will be for sale at the Advent intergenerational event on Dec. 2 for $55.00. A sample is on display in the dining room. If you want one you can indicate by signing the order sheet at the display or you may purchase one at the event. There will be approximately 30 for sale. We sold these several years ago and families who purchased one have been very pleased with the beauty, simplicity and easy way of creating a worship space in their home during the Advent season. Also on sale at the Dec. 2 event will be the 15" oasis forms and sets of Advent candles. All checks for these supplies are to be made payable to "Chapel of the Cross" with "wreaths, candles".

Greenery Needed

For our annual Advent wreath making event on the first Sunday in Advent (Dec. 2), we need parishioners to donate greenery to make wreaths. If you can bring a bag of clippings from your yard, please let us know by signing your name on the sheet marked "Greenery" on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room.

Children's Bibles & Bulletins

NEW! We have placed a bookcase of Beginner's Bibles and Illustrated Bibles in the narthex. We encourage children to bring their Bibles from home (Beginner's Bibles are given when children are 2 years old and the Illustrated Bibles are given when children are in the 2nd grade) but when that does not happen, there are 20 of each of these Bibles to use in the service at times when it may become difficult for children to participate fully. After the service, please return the Bibles to the bookcase. If you do not have your own copy, contact the educators and they will give you one. The Children's Bulletin follows Rite I and Rite II with icons to indicate postures and pictures to help children understand each part of the service.

Annual Giving News

Pledges received to date increased to 372 for a total of $911,656. Thank you! Recent articles in the secular press have uncovered scandals regarding some "charities." How different is the open and transparent process in an Episcopal parish like ours regarding where our contributions go. Please do add your pledge now if you have not done so already. An accurate understanding of the campaign results will help the vestry plan which good works we can expand in 2008!

Final Project 5000 Report

Our parish provided 293 boxes of food to the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service during Project 5000. Thank you for helping make this a success. If you have additional boxes, filled or unfilled, please return them so they can be reused.

Free Parking!!

The church has purchased tokens for parking in the Morehead and the Rosemary town lots for individuals attending church services, business or meetings at any time Monday-Friday, including those attending the Sunday 5:15 service. These tokens are available in the parish office from one of the administrative staff. If there is a scheduled meeting after office hours, the person convening or chairing the meeting may obtain a sufficient number of tokens for anticipated attendees from the administrative staff prior to the meeting. The Morehead lot is free until 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday; the town lot is free all day Sunday. For the Sunday 5:15 service, the service coordinator should obtain tokens. Please note that the Morehead tokens are for one (1) hour each and the town lot tokens are for 1/2 hour each. Be sure to obtain an adequate number of tokens to cover the total time you are parked. Please take only the number of tokens needed and return unneeded ones as the church is paying for the tokens.

Episcopal Campus Ministry Christmas Wreaths

Deck the halls with beautiful, scented balsam wreaths from the great state of Maine. Wottons' Evergreens has been working with the Chapel of the Cross for the past eleven years, providing us with this unique mission fund-raising opportunity. Buy one for yourself or send one to friends and loved ones for Christmas. Look for us following the services today.

Mary Harris Bible Study Class

The Mary Harris Bible Study Class will not meet on Tuesday, Nov. 20 because of Thanksgiving. The class will resume meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am in the parish library and will begin to read Jude.

Advent Quiet Day

The Rev. Tammy Lee will lead the Advent Quiet Day on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9:30 am until 2:30 pm in the Dogwood Dining Hall at Camp New Hope. Tammy will share her reflections on the topic of fulfillment using Luke 1:45 as a scriptural basis. There will be silent times for prayer and reflection, a quiet lunch, and a concluding Eucharist. Camp New Hope is located on Highway 86 north of Chapel Hill (www.newhopeccc.org). Casual dress is encouraged, as there will be opportunities for walking outdoors during the times of reflection. Breakfast snacks and lunch with vegetarian options will be served ($6 donation suggested). Please stop by or call the Parish office at 929-2193 to register. For more information, contact Jan Seabock at jseabock@mindspring.com or (call office for number).

Stewardship Opportunities

Soup Labels to Benefit Thompson's Child & Family Focus

Put untrimmed whole labels for Campbell's, Pepperidge Farm and Swanson products in the Thompson's box in the office. A sheet with more details is also in the box. If someone wishes to head up this project which benefits Thompson's Child and Family focus, contact Peggy Pratt at (call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com.

Calling All Runners

A group of runners from the The Chapel of the Cross is planning to train for and run the Charlottesville Marathon on April 19, 2008. There is a half-marathon option. The purposes will be running, fellowship, and raising some money for Episcopal Relief and Development. We will hold an organizational meeting on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 10:30 am in the parlor. Contact David Frazelle at 929-2193 or dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org.

New IFC Cook Team Still Needs More Members

Chapel of the Cross is starting a new cook team for the IFC kitchen. The team will cook the evening meal on the 4th Tuesday of each month beginning in January. Teams are generally composed of 6-8 members with several alternates. Serving on a cook team with a group of other parishioners is a great way to broaden your parish family while providing very tangible help to those in need. If you would like to sign up or just learn more, contact Gale Gilchrist at ggilchrist1@nc.rr.com or call her at (call office for number).

Good Samaritan Guild Needs You!

The Good Samaritan Guild responds to the needs of parishioners in times of short term crisis or illness, with defined tasks such as delivering casseroles and soups, transportation to health care appointments and church services, running errands, and respite care giving to convalescents or care givers. We need parishioners to act as coordinators, willing to take a calendar slot and follow up by phone with parishioners in need, referred by the clergy or the parish office. If further assistance is needed, they can follow through themselves or contact others in Good Sam for help. There are meals in the church freezer ready to deliver. If you might like to make calls but cannot do driving, we will team you up with folks who can carry out that piece of things. This is a great way to minister to our own and the time requirement is minimal. If you and one or two others would like to take a month as a team, that would be great. A call to a parishioner who is going through a difficult time is a wonderful support in this large parish. Often the call is our only intervention but it is nice to know that the network is in place if more help might be needed in the future. If you are willing to lend a hand in making calls, coordinating or helping with needed assistance, please contact Peggy Pratt at (call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com.

Burmese Family Current Needs

Again, we are grateful for the many warm clothes brought in for the children. Currently we are looking for gently used jeans and casual cotton slacks, boy's sizes 14, 16 and/or 16X. They now all have medium weight jackets, but they will need heavy coats, knitted caps, gloves and scarfs as the colder weather approaches. Please keep them in mind as you get out your warmest winter clothes for the season. They still need a small kitchen cart with one or two shelves that would hold a small microwave. A small microwave is also needed. The sign-up sheet is in the dining room.

Johnson Intern Needs

The new intern house is short a few items. The items needed include: a microwave, a blender, and a mixer (either hand-held or counter-top). Also, two bicycles (intern personal bikes) were stolen recently, so if anyone has a bike to donate, it would be appreciated. If someone can donate these items, please contact Susan Gladin at johnson.intern@gmail.com or call her at 929-2193, ext. 14. Thank you so much!

Household Furnishings Needed

Two new Oxford houses are being set up to serve residents of Orange and Durham County and they are urgently seeking household furnishings such as mattresses, dressers, lamps, sheets, blankets and toiletries. Oxford Houses are a nationwide organization that provide an affordable, alcohol and drug free environment for individuals recovering from alcoholism and drug abuse. Each house is democratically self-run by the members, is financially self-supporting and responsible for all household expenses and is drug and alcohol free. This program provides a wonderful bridge for recovering individuals being discharged from intensive drug and alcohol programs or prison incarceration. Larger items can be picked up at your home. Smaller items can be brought to church. Contact Paula Harrington, Special Project Coordinator for Oxford Houses in North Carolina, directly at (call office for number) or pharring@med.unc.edu. You may contact Peggy Pratt, Social Ministry Chair, at (call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com if you have other questions.

Cook Team Needed

The Social Ministry committee is starting a monthly cook team for Orange House, the AIDS Alliance House in Carrboro. We are planning to cook and share dinner with the residents around 5:00 pm on the second Tuesday of each month. If you are interested, contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com or (call office for number).
