Episcopal Youth Community
EYC will not meet tonight! Many of us are recovering from the ski trip. Hope you have a wonderful week. We will look forward to seeing you next week! EYC meets from 5:30 to 7:30 most Sunday evenings. All 6th to 12th graders are invited to attend! Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with questions.
Compline tonight at 9:30 pm
"Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is." The ancient monastic service of Compline, the "completion" of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.
Church School
Church School is offered most Sundays, September through mid-May for two year-olds through adults. The classes and their locations are posted around the building and on the bulletin boards in the dining room. Church School is from 10:20 am to 11:05 am. Registration forms are available for parents of children and youth to complete. New students are welcome at any time during the year.
12:30 Social Hour
You are invited each week following the 11:15 Sunday morning service to enjoy food, fellowship and a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross with old-timers and newcomers alike. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Volunteers are needed to bring food to share. Food should be ready to serve. Food suggestions include such savory and sweet items as: cheese & crackers; chips & dip; crudite platter; sandwiches; fruit; cakes; cookies; light liquid refreshment is also welcome. Please sign up for a week to be a food provider on the calendar posted in the kitchen. LABEL your food with 12:30 SOCIAL HOUR, mark it with the date and deliver your food to the kitchen just before the 11:15 Sunday morning service.

Parish Notes
Biodegradeable Cutlery
The Environmental Stewardship Committee will be selling biodegradable forks and spoons in the parlor today between morning services. This cutlery is made from potato starch and clay. It is dishwasher-safe and can be reused. It can also be composted. It is the perfect addition to a "trash-free" lunch!
Can you pack a "trash free" lunch?
This Lent, we are encouraging children (and adults) to pack "trash-free" lunches. One thing to consider when packing (or unpacking) a lunchbox is that anything that goes to the landfill stays in the landfill. A banana peel, for instance, will compost easily (and add nitrogen to your compost pile) but if it is thrown in the garbage and sent to the landfill, it will be stuck in an anaerobic environment where it cannot biodegrade. If you have a home compost pile, use it!
Lenten Offerings
Prayer groups on Sunday morning during adult education in Room 1, Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30 in Room 6, Wednesdays from 9:00 - 10:00 am in Room 6 and Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 - 5:15 in Room 6, welcome additional participants. The Monday night series with Dr. Marcia Mount Shoop on the Christology of John is meeting in Room 4-5. Participants are reminded to bring a Bible and notebook. The assigned reading for this week is John 2:1-11, 3:1-21, 4:1-40 and 4:46-54. Yoga continues on Mondays from 10:30 am-11:30 am in the dining room. Devotional resources and offering boxes are available in the dining room. The offering will be divided with half going to purchase vitamins for children in Honduras and the other half to the parish's Millennium Development Goals Inspiration Fund. Boxes are to be returned on Easter Sunday.
ABC Sale Funds Request
The Social Ministry Committee is accepting requests for funds from the annual ABC Sale. The annual ABC Sale will be held on Saturday, April 12. Proceeds from the sale go to area nonprofit organizations that target children, education, mental and physical heath and homelessness/poverty. The 2007 sale profits provided over $26,000 to benefit 22 area organizations. The social ministry committee is now accepting requests for grants from the sale profits. Anyone wishing to make such a request may obtain an application from the parish office or get a copy from the parish website. The guidelines for consideration of requests is also on the website. The deadline for receiving applications is March 31. If you are involved with an organization or know of one interested in submitting a request, please pass this information on to them. Applications can be mailed to the church, attention Social Ministry, ABC. For more information, contact Cynthia Crittenden (call church office for number) or crcrittenden@bellsouth.net.
ABC Sale
As you can imagine, it takes an enormous amount of work to turn our parish house into bargain central for the annual ABC Sale. This year the sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 12. We need much time, many talents, and magnificent treasures to make our sale a success. We want to raise as much money as possible for our local charities in need! If you can help us with storage or transportation of large items or if you have mobility issues and anticipate needing help in bring your merchandise to the sale, please contact Nancy Tunnessen at ntunnessen@nc.rr.com or telephone one of the chairpersons. Nancy will contact you in advance of the sale to schedule a pick up. We also are in great need of BROWN BAGS. Please start collecting brown paper bags for use during the sale. There is a collection box for the bags in the dining room. We will be answering questions, recruiting volunteers, and collecting bags at a table in the dining room after each service beginning Feb. 17. Please contact ABC Sale co-chairs Mindy Morton (mortons04@nc.rr.com or (call office for number)) or Heather Benjamin (habenjam@bellsouth.net or (call office for number)if you can help with the sale or if we can answer any questions.
Chapel of the Cross/UNC Habitat Partnership
Spring is a great time to join Habitat for Humanity, and the Chapel of the Cross/UNC Student Habitat for Humanity Partnership is eager for new volunteers. We need builders and planners for joint fundraising activities with our sister parish St. Paul AME. To get involved, contact Harry Watson (call church office for numbers) or hwatson@email.unc.edu.
Child Mortality Cross
It will take 15,240 popsicle sticks to build the Child Mortality Cross in the dining room. That is the number of children under the age of five who will die from preventable, treatable causes connected to poverty during ONE DAY of Lent. Please take a moment to reflect on this staggering number while gluing sticks to the cross. Information and devotionals related to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are available by the cross. We should be comforted to know that our gifts to the MDGs are making a difference. The New York Times has reported that deaths from malaria have been drastically cut by the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Mosquito nets were part of our Chapel of the Cross Advent offering. During Lent, we are raising money to help our sister parish in Honduras buy vitamins for the children in a neighboring village, children who are desperately poor and undernourished. Please consider giving.
Social Ministry Committee Table
Visit the SMC table in the dining room Sunday mornings between the 9:00 am and 11:15 am services. A committee member will be there to answer questions, provide information on parish outreach projects, identify volunteer opportunities or just chat! We welcome the chance to communicate with interested parishioners on social ministry and outreach issues. Come by and say hello.
Protect God's Creation! "Fast from Carbon" for Lent
The Environmental Stewardship Committee invites you to "fast from carbon" during Lent and beyond. Carbon dioxide is the dominant "green house gas" that is contributing to the warming of our planet and the disruption of our climate. During the five Sundays of Lent, members of the committee will be stationed in the parish office between the 9:00 and 11:15 services, with computers and Internet access, ready to help you measure your "carbon footprint." By answering a few questions, you will learn the amount of carbon that you are putting into the air in the form of carbon dioxide. You will also receive information on how to reduce that footprint and measure your progress. It is not essential, but it will be helpful if you have an approximate idea of how much you spend each month for energy in your home (i.e. for electricity, natural gas, heating oil or kerosene). If you have questions about this, please contact Linda Gaines (from Jan. 27-Feb. 18) at lggaines.95@alum.mines.edu or Linda Rimer at lbrimer@bellsouth.net (after Feb. 18, 2008).
Vacation Church School
This year's Vacation Church School will be held June 23-27 for children ages 4-fifth grade. VCS is a morning program only (9:00 am- 12:00 pm). If you have time to volunteer - either with preparations before VCS or during the week - please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 ext. 37. Thank you to those who have already responded! We cannot offer VCS without your help!
Recruiting Coordinators
Coordinators are needed at 5:15 pm. It is a wonderful way to contribute to our Sunday afternoon service in the Chapel. Rotation is running every 4 - 6 weeks. If you are interested please contact Allan Rimer (call office for number) or rimerae@bv.com.
Our Cup Runneth Over
If you have lost car keys, glasses, books, coats or other misc items, please claim them in the church office before they are donated to IFC. If you have questions contact Marsha Pate weekdays at mpate@thechapelofthecross.org.
Office Volunteers
Our church office counts on volunteers to help answer phones, prepare mailings, data entry, and assist with special projects. Times are available Mon.,Tues., Thurs. & Fri. in 2-hour slots, weekly or bi-weekly. Please contact Marsha Pate at 929-2193 or mpate@thechapelofthecross.org if this unique contribution appeals to you.

Men's Prayer Breakfast
The Chapel of the Cross Men's Prayer Breakfast will meet Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at 7:30 am in the Chapel. This month's speaker is Ted Vaden who will share with us "What the Lord may be reading in the daily news". There will be a presentation and an opportunity to ask questions. Our cooks are Watty Bowes and Ken Talbot. Please make time to join us as we explore scripture through the daily recording of events in the Triangle's most popular newspaper. Hopefully you will join us.
Dancing With the Stars
The Graduate and Professional Student Group is sponsoring a dance for individuals with special needs on Saturday, March 1 from 7 pm to 9 pm at the church. Parishioners are encouraged to invite anyone they know who would be interested in sharing in the fun. Refreshments will be provided, and the room is wheelchair accessible. Any graduate or professional students who are interested in assisting with this event should contact Jenny Milucky at jmilucky1@gmail.com.
Save the Date
Saturday, April 5. Plan to participate in a hands-on opportunity to help eliminate world hunger. Bring your friends, your neighbors, your scout troop, your parents, your grandchildren, and join with other churches and community organizations to package meals to be sent to some of the most destitute countries in the southern hemisphere. Last year 175,000 meals were packaged in Chapel Hill alone, and participants enthusiastically asked to be invited again this year.
Stewardship Opportunities
Orange - Alamance Prison Ministry
The Orange Alamance Prison Ministry is in the final weeks of a drive to raise money to build a modest chapel at the Hillsborough unit where members of our parish visit weekly. Any amount is appreciated. A $100 donation will purchase a memorial brick with a name, an inscription on it , to be placed in in the Peace Garden. Checks can be made to Chapel of the Cross with a note "for the Prison Chapel." If you have questions call Terry Johnston (call church office for number).
IFC News and Needs
There are 1,068 households in our community with Food Pantry membership cards entitling them to monthly visits to the pantry in Carrboro to get groceries. Food distribution at the pantry is up by 39%. Donations of food from congregations and other groups is up by 3%. Our donations are appreciated and used immediately. Thank you for the generous way you contribute to this community need. Current requests are for cans of meat, spaghetti and black beans; dry beans; mayonnaise (1 lb.); flour and sugar (2 lbs.); oil (32 oz.); macaroni and cheese; juice; cereal; and shampoo and personal care items. Donations may be left in baskets at the church or taken to the IFC at 110 West Main Street in Carrboro. Anyone who would like to help occasionally with delivering items from the church to the IFC may get in touch with Alice Cotten at acotten@email.unc.edu.
Ways to Assist our Burmese Friends
If you have school-aged children, consider taking several of our children on an outing with your family. (Our six children range in ages 4 - 18 years). Do you need yard work done such as mulching, raking, general clean-up, or garage clean-up? Consider having one of our adults help you for a day. If you are familiar with the bus system in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, consider spending a morning teaching them how to get to the Carrboro Clinic or the Social Service Office on Homestead. If you need help tackling a pile of ironing, consider having Po Loe over for a morning. Visit the Social Ministries table between the 9:00 and 11:15 Sunday services to sign up or get more information. For more information, please contact Barbara Tremblay (call office for number) or Gale Gilchrist (call office for number).
