Episcopal Youth Community

Wear clothes you don't mind getting MESSY! We will meet at our regular time and place today. EYC meets most Sundays from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the basement for fellowship, fun, and food. All 6th through 12th graders are invited to attend. Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with questions.

ECM and Relay For Life

ECM has joined the fight against cancer by forming a team for this year's Relay for Life on campus. This event raises money directly benefiting the American Cancer Society. You can help light the way to a cure for cancer and honor loved ones who have battled this disease by making a donation or purchasing a luminaria to honor someone fighting cancer or in remembrance of one who has lost their battle with cancer. Lit luminarias will be placed around the track during the Relay for Life event and recipient names will be read aloud. Please see an ECM member outside the church after the 9:00 or 11:15 services today if you would like to purchase a luminaria. For more information, please contact Chrissie Ezzell (ccezzell@email.unc.edu).

Young Adults Post-Compline Refreshments

Our Young Adults group heads out to Franklin Street for church-sponsored refreshments after the weekly 9:30 Sunday night Compline service. This week is no exception and all our graduate and professional students and other such folks, in school or otherwise, are welcome! Contact John Derrick, jd@unc.edu, for further information.

Church School

Church School is offered most Sundays, September through mid-May for two year-olds through adults. The classes and their locations are posted around the building and on the bulletin boards in the dining room. Church School is from 10:20 am to 11:05 am. Registration forms are available for parents of children and youth to complete. New students are welcome at any time during the year.

12:30 Social Hour

You are invited each week following the 11:15 Sunday morning service to enjoy food, fellowship and a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross with old-timers and newcomers alike. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Volunteers are needed to bring food to share. Food should be ready to serve. Food suggestions include such savory and sweet items as: cheese & crackers; chips & dip; crudite platter; sandwiches; fruit; cakes; cookies; light liquid refreshment is also welcome. Please sign up for a week to be a food provider on the calendar posted in the kitchen. LABEL your food with 12:30 SOCIAL HOUR, mark it with the date and deliver your food to the kitchen just before the 11:15 Sunday morning service.

This Week

Episcopal Campus Ministry

All university students are invited to our weekly fellowship and dinner in the campus center Tuesdays at 5:30 pm. This week we will meet for a program on vocation led by Tammy and for the announcement of next year's Student Chaplains.

Wednesday Potluck

Did you know about the choristers' wonderful post-rehearsal tradition? Every Wednesday evening friends share a potluck dinner in the parish dining room from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. It is an excellent time to grow in the parish community! Please join us for supper and bring your favorite recipe if you can. Please contact Marsha Pate (call office) or email at marshapate@nc.rr.com if you have any questions.

Parish Visitors

Parish Visitors will meet at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 6 in the library. All parishioners are welcome to attend and learn more about this important ministry to our homebound members. For more information, contact Bob Comey (call church office for number).

Parish Notes

Liturgical Manners during the Winter

In this cold and flu season, Mrs. Murphy says a "hands-free" passing of the peace is quite acceptable. Simply clasp one's hands together and greet your neighbor with a heartfelt "The peace of the Lord be with you." Also, when receiving the wine, dipping (the wafer) rather than sipping is considerate if you have the sniffles. Thank you very much.

Daylight Savings Begins

Please be sure to set all your clocks ahead one hour at bedtime this Saturday, March 8. Daylight saving begins earlier this year and all services and meetings on Sunday, March 9 will take place at the new daylight-saving time.

Vestry Election Results

The vestry elections are complete. We thank all those who presented themselves for parish leadership. Congratulations to those elected: Ann Craver, Harriet Gaillard, Doug Kelly and Bill Stockard.

Girl Scout Sunday

Girl Scout Sunday gives girls an opportunity to attend their place of worship and be recognized as a Girl Scout. If you were or are a Girl Scout, please join us next Sunday at the 9:00 am service by wearing your Girl Scout pin. Current Girl Scouts and leaders will be sitting together at the front of the church for the service. The Girl Scouts would like to invite the congregation for refreshments during coffee hour following the 9:00 service. Contact Lorraine McBride, Troop 219, by email at lbmcbride@aol.com or phone (call office for number) or Rose Wignall, Troop 1522 and Troop 136, by email at rwignall@nc.rr.com or phone (call office for number) with questions.

Burmese Refugees Making Progress!

We are pleased to report that Ah Lin (father) is now employed by the Finley Golf Course working 40+ hours a week. Because of his long hours, Po Loe (mother) must rely on work primarily done at home such as ironing and sewing. We are looking for someone in the parish with seamstress skills who can teach Po Loe some more refined sewing skills such as blind stitch hemming. She has a new Singer machine and is very eager to perfect her skills so that she can do seamstress work. We anticipate one or two sessions of two hours each. We are also happy to report that each of the school-aged children now has a tutor. We also welcome Kim Williams to our team. Kim will be primarily helping with the many medical appointments. Sein Lah (18 year-old son) is available for yard work on Saturdays. Po Loe is also willing to do yard work on Saturdays. Please contact Barbara Tremblay (Call office for number) or Gale Gilchrist (call office for number) for more information, or visit the Social Ministries table after Sunday morning services.

Web-Site Team Needs Extra Hands

The team of parishioners that has been updating the design of the parish website is nearing the completion of its task. We now need 3 or 4 more parishioners to join the team that keeps the website content up to date by posting Sunday Announcements, Cross Roads, vestry minutes, sermons, etc. Experience working with web sites is desirable, but anyone comfortable with computers would be able to do this work. Team members work in rotation and time requirements have flexibility. If you have interest in helping with this particular parish ministry, please contact Websexton Dwight Smith (DwightSmith@nc.rr.com) or Communications Coordinator Vivian Varner (vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org).

ECM Honduras Mission Trips

The Episcopal Campus Ministry's team of nine is preparing to depart for their spring break mission trip to the Camp of Love and Hope in Tegucigalpa, Honduras from March 8-15. The camp, which was started by El Hogar Projects to help orphaned, abandoned and desperately poor boys and girls in Honduras, is now home to almost 90 children. Team members, who include Dr. Bill Joyner, Pat VanCulin, Gracie Killman, Chrissie Ezzell, John Allen, Joe McClellan, Kate Metcalf, Lane Erickson and Liz Gilliam, will be commissioned during the announcements at today's 11:15 service. In Honduras, the team will work on various building or maintenance projects throughout the camp, and will be given the opportunity to interact with the children and join in some of the regular activities at camp. As this mission draws ever closer, the team asks that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers, helping them to be mindful of their actions and their purpose of serving others and glorifying God. If you would like to know more about their mission trip, please look for their article in the March Cross Roads.

Attach Yourself to El Hogar

Help ECM on their mission trip to the Episcopal Orphanage for Boys and Girls in Honduras by bringing glue sticks, masking tape or scotch tape for the college students to take to our friends in Honduras over spring break. We will be collecting them at the entrance to the church on March 2 and during the next two weeks in the office. A small offering will make a big difference in the school days of these children.

Protect God's Creation! "Fast from Carbon" for Lent

The Environmental Stewardship Committee invites you to "fast from carbon" during Lent and beyond. Carbon dioxide is the dominant "green house gas" that is contributing to the warming of our planet and the disruption of our climate. During the five Sundays of Lent, members of the committee will be stationed in the parish office between the 9:00 and 11:15 services, with computers and Internet access, ready to help you measure your "carbon footprint." By answering a few questions, you will learn the amount of carbon that you are putting into the air in the form of carbon dioxide. You will also receive information on how to reduce that footprint and measure your progress. If you have questions about this, please contact Linda Rimer at lbrimer@bellsouth.net or (call office for number).

Child Mortality Cross

The popsicle-stick cross in the dining room continues to grow. Each stick represents a child under the age of five who will die from preventable, treatable causes related to poverty between breakfast and bedtime during ONE DAY of Lent. Please take a moment to add sticks to the cross and remember the poor who will benefit from the Millennium Development Goals. Already, the number of deaths from malaria has been greatly reduced by the use of mosquito nets, some of which our parish provided through donations to Episcopal Relief and Development. Devotional materials related to the MDGs are by the cross.

Compostable Cutlery

The Environmental Stewardship Committee is selling biodegradable forks and spoons in the parlor today between morning services. This cutlery is made from potato starch and clay. It is dishwasher-safe and can be reused. It can also be composted. It is the perfect addition to a "trash-free" lunch!

Can you pack a "trash free" lunch?

This Lent, we are encouraging children (and adults) to pack "trash-free" lunches. One thing to consider when packing (or unpacking) a lunchbox is that anything that goes to the landfill stays in the landfill. A banana peel, for instance, will compost easily (and add nitrogen to your compost pile) but if it is thrown in the garbage and sent to the landfill, it will be stuck in an anaerobic environment where it cannot biodegrade. If you have a home compost pile, use it!

Lenten Offerings

Prayer groups on Sunday morning during adult education in Room 1, Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30 in Room 6, Wednesdays from 9:00 - 10:00 am in Room 6 and Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 - 5:15 in Room 6, welcome additional participants. The Monday night series with Dr. Marcia Mount Shoop on the Christology of John is meeting in Room 4-5. Participants are reminded to bring a Bible and notebook. The assigned reading for this week is John 2:1-11, 3:1-21, 4:1-40 and 4:46-54. Yoga continues on Mondays from 10:30 am-11:30 am in the dining room. Devotional resources and offering boxes are available in the dining room. The offering will be divided with half going to purchase vitamins for children in Honduras and the other half to the parish's Millennium Development Goals Inspiration Fund. Boxes are to be returned on Easter Sunday.

ABC Sale Funds Request

The Social Ministry Committee is accepting requests for funds from the annual ABC Sale. The annual ABC Sale will be held on Saturday, April 12. Proceeds from the sale go to area nonprofit organizations that target children, education, mental and physical heath and homelessness/poverty. The 2007 sale profits provided over $26,000 to benefit 22 area organizations. The social ministry committee is now accepting requests for grants from the sale profits. Anyone wishing to make such a request may obtain an application from the parish office or get a copy from the parish website. The guidelines for consideration of requests is also on the website. The deadline for receiving applications is March 31. If you are involved with an organization or know of one interested in submitting a request, please pass this information on to them. Applications can be mailed to the church, attention Social Ministry, ABC. For more information, contact Cynthia Crittenden (call church office for number) or crcrittenden@bellsouth.net.

ABC Sale

As you can imagine, it takes an enormous amount of work to turn our parish house into bargain central for the annual ABC Sale. This year the sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 12. We need much time, many talents, and magnificent treasures to make our sale a success. We want to raise as much money as possible for our local charities in need! If you can help us with storage or transportation of large items or if you have mobility issues and anticipate needing help in bring your merchandise to the sale, please contact Nancy Tunnessen at ntunnessen@nc.rr.com or telephone one of the chairpersons. Nancy will contact you in advance of the sale to schedule a pick up. We also are in great need of BROWN BAGS. Please start collecting brown paper bags for use during the sale. There is a collection box for the bags in the dining room. We will be answering questions, recruiting volunteers, and collecting bags at a table in the dining room after each service beginning Feb. 17. Please contact ABC Sale co-chairs Mindy Morton (mortons04@nc.rr.com or (call office for number) or Heather Benjamin (habenjam@bellsouth.net or (call office for number) if you can help with the sale or if we can answer any questions.

Chapel of the Cross/UNC Habitat Partnership

Spring is a great time to join Habitat for Humanity, and the Chapel of the Cross/UNC Student Habitat for Humanity Partnership is eager for new volunteers. We need builders and planners for joint fundraising activities with our sister parish St. Paul AME. To get involved, contact Harry Watson (call church office for numbers) or hwatson@email.unc.edu.

Social Ministry Committee Table

Visit the SMC table in the dining room Sunday mornings between the 9:00 am and 11:15 am services. A committee member will be there to answer questions, provide information on parish outreach projects, identify volunteer opportunities or just chat! We welcome the chance to communicate with interested parishioners on social ministry and outreach issues. Come by and say hello.

Vacation Church School

This year's Vacation Church School will be held June 23-27 for children ages 4-fifth grade. VCS is a morning program only (9:00 am- 12:00 pm).
