Announcements

Child Mortality Cross

Throughout Lent, parishioners helped build a cross of popsicle sticks, with each stick representing a child under the age of five who would die of preventable, treatable causes related to poverty during one day of Lent. We completed the cross on Palm Sunday, gluing the last of 15,240 sticks. Please take a moment to look at the cross and reflect on the staggering number of children around the world who suffer from the effects of malnutrition and poor living conditions. Happily, these numbers are changing. By supporting the Millennium Development Goals, we are saving lives. In the same week that we completed the Child Mortality Cross, our church mailed a check to Episcopal Relief and Development in the amount of $5,614.72 to buy mosquito nets for people at risk of contracting malaria. The money was raised through a variety of efforts: Eat In to Help Out, Advent alternative gift giving and individual donations. The money will provide more than 450 insecticide-treated nets and training in their use, and will help limit the spread of a deadly disease.

Poetry Reading

The Adult Education class next Sunday, March 30, will be Easter Poetry, led by parishioners Barbara Schutz and Martha Dill. Responding to repeated requests of the parish's poetry lovers, poems of the Easter season will be read on this first Sunday of Eastertide. Bring your favorite to share. Martha Dill and Barbara Schutz will have poems too.

Youth Service Projects

EYC will be participating in a number of service projects in the coming weeks. Our first chance to help out will be with the MILLION MEALS project, a Chapel Hill wide project organized by the Rotary Club. On Saturday, April 5 from 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm we will gather to help prepare meals for relief projects around the world. Each dollar donated will provide five vegetarian meals to people in need. We are donating nearly $600 to this effort. There are ten spots for our parish's youth to work on the project, please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org to save your place. Our second chance to help out will be back at the church. Every year the ABC Sale counts on the EYC's strong bodies and boundless energy to transform our church buildings into the biggest one day rummage sale ever seen. We will be moving racks and setting up tables from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm on April 6. There will be treats to follow! Our third and final opportunity for the beginning of April is on Saturday the 12th. EYC will be in the kitchen preparing and selling lunch. This project is so much fun and we help to raise money for great causes in our community. Please contact Caren Parker at 929-2193 or cparker@thechapelofthecross.org to sign up for any of these great opportunities.

Gretchen's Sabbatical Begins

Gretchen Jordan will begin a 3 month sabbatical this week. Programs have been tailored for the spring to accommodate the decrease in staffing. In addition, Boykin Bell, Christian Formation Assistant, will have increased hours to partially compensate. Boykin plans to be in the office Monday - Friday in the mornings. You may contact her at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org. Gretchen has posted an outline of her sabbatical studies on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room.

Vacation Church School

Vacation Church School will be held June 23-27 from 9:00 am - noon. Registration forms for parishioners are available outside the Christian Formation office. Registration will open to the general public on May 1. Volunteers are needed, both as lead teachers and occasional extra hands. Please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 ext. 37 if you are willing to help.

ABC Sale Funds Requests

The Social Ministry Committee is accepting requests for funds from the annual ABC Sale. The annual ABC Sale will be held on Saturday, April 12. Proceeds from the sale go to area nonprofit organizations that target children, education, mental and physical heath and homelessness/poverty. The 2007 sale profits provided over $26,000 to benefit 22 area organizations. The Social Ministry Committee is now accepting requests for grants from the sale proceeds. Anyone wishing to make such a request may obtain an application from the parish office or from the parish website. The guidelines for consideration of requests are also on the website. The deadline for receiving applications is March 31. If you are involved with an organization or know of one interested in submitting a request, please pass this information on to them. Applications can be mailed to the church, attention Social Ministry, ABC. For more information, contact Cynthia Crittenden at (call office for number) or crcrittenden@bellsouth.net.

ABC Sale Donations

In planning your donations for the ABC Sale, please note that we accept almost any type of merchandise, from furniture to clothing, household items to antiques, books to toys. Please however do not donate torn, dirty or broken items. Please be aware that some items do not sell well, such as encyclopedias, textbooks, computers, typewriters, large appliances, and exercise equipment. If you have any question about an item, please ask us first. Unfortunately we can not accept mattresses, futons, car seats, oversized furniture or artificial Christmas trees either. We do have a list of agencies that might take some of these items. Feel free to ask for names and numbers if you need them. Unsalable items are offered to agencies helping people in need, but we often have to pay for them to receive the goods. Co-chairs Heather Benjamin (call office for number or habenjam@bellsouth.net and Mindy Morton (call office for number or mortons04@nc.rr.com) hope you are able to join us for the ABC SALE on Saturday, April 12 and are able to donate some time and goods to the sale set up week April 7-11.

A Treasured Affair

Please join us for A Treasured Affair, an early evening gathering to which you are asked to bring a treasure for donation to the ABC Sale. David Lindquist, owner of Whitehall Antiques at the Villa, will offer his expert appraisal of your special treasures. Refreshments will be offered. Wednesday, April 2, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at #1 The Glen (the Home of Martin and Jane Rody). Please RSVP by March 23 to Mindy Morton ((Call office for number) or mortons04@nc.rr.com) or Heather Benjamin (call office for number or habenjam@bellsouth.net.

Godly Play Training

Chapel of the Cross will be hosting a three-day training session for people interested in becoming Godly Play storytellers on Sept. 11-13. This is a rare opportunity to become an accredited Godly Play storyteller free of charge (training usually costs $360 per person). Space is limited to 24 participants and the training is open to the public. Because we expect spaces to fill quickly, we want to reserve spots now for any interested parishioners. Please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org to register.

Attention Music Lovers

Hold the Date and sign up in the church office for the April 5, 5:00 pm presentation by Dr. Van Quinn on Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem". Commissioned for the reconsecration of the Coventry Cathedral after WW II, the text is based on the traditional Latin liturgy and the poetry of Wilfred Owen. The Durham Choral Society will perform this work on April 19 and 20. More information will be included in the April Cross Roads.

Stewardship Opportunities

Feed the Hungry

Participate in a hands-on opportunity to help eliminate world hunger. Bring your friends, your neighbors, your scout troop, your parents, your grandchildren, and join with other churches and community organizations to package meals to be sent to some of the most destitute countries in the southern hemisphere. Last year over a Million Meals were packaged by volunteers in North Carolina, 175,000 of them in Chapel Hill alone. Chapel of the Cross outreach dollars help to support this project. Saturday, April 5 plan to spend a couple of hours participating in this opportunity to make a difference in combating world hunger while having a great time. The date this year is April 5. Place is American Legion Hall. Participate in either of 2 sessions, 9:00 am-11:30 am or 12:00-2:30 pm. To sign up, email: crcrittenden@bellsouth.net.

The Johnson Interns Need Your Help!

Please donate new and gently used t-shirts, athletic shorts, socks and sneakers to the marked box in the dining room. Items will benefit participants of PACE, Chapel Hill's first walking group for shelter residents. PACE (Physical Activity Creating Empowerment) cultivates relationships and empowers shelter residents to improve their overall health and wellness through their dedication to walking as a team. The insatiable power of the human spirit unites us as we move forward one step at a time.

Community Notes

CROP Walk

The annual CROP walk will be on the afternoon of April 13 this year. CROP Walk raises funds to fight hunger and other struggles that poverty stricken individuals face both at home and abroad. More specifically, a percentage of the money goes directly to the Inter-Faith Council, which is sponsoring the event here in Chapel Hill. Chapel of the Cross will have a team, and the church will also serve as a water stop along the route! If you are interested in volunteering as a walker, contributing money or helping with the water stop, please e-mail Jimmy Satterwhite at jimmysa@alumni.unc.edu. You may also visit the Social Ministry Committee table in the dining room.

IFC Golf Tournament

Saturday, April 26, the InterFaith Council will host the 8th Annual Brian Clemens Memorial Golf Tournament at The Challenge Golf Club in Graham. This event is supported by many local congregations. We hope to have more of a Chapel of the Cross presence there this year. This fun Captain's Choice format tournament offers 18 holes of golf, cart fees, a hot picnic lunch, prizes, awards, and special contests all for just $68 per person while benefiting the InterFaith Council. To learn more, come to the Social Ministry table in the dining room, go to www.brianclemens.org or contact Ted or Peggy Pratt at (call office for number) tedpratt@nc.rr.com.

Duke Laity Weekend

Duke Laity weekend is an opportunity for laity of all communions to cultivate their faith through focused study of spiritual formation, theology, Christian tradition, history, and scripture. The event's theme is "Forgiving Our Enemies: The Test of True Faith" with keynote speaker Dr. J. Warren Smith. It takes place April 25-26. For tuition information call (call office for number) or visit www.divinity.duke.edu/laityweekend.
