Today

Parent Gathering: Godparenting

During the weeks of Lent, the Sunday morning adult education classes discussed the different promises made in the Baptismal Covenant. As a follow-up, the parent gathering this morning will introduce Tracey Herzer's new book, Godparenting. Whether you are the sponsor of a baptized child, a parent, a teacher or a friend, you are helping to "godparent" the next generation and nurture young faith. Join us in the library (10:20-11:05) to talk about the responsibilities and opportunities adults have to Christian children.

Child Mortality Cross

Throughout Lent, parishioners helped build a cross of popsicle sticks, with each stick representing a child under the age of five who would die of preventable, treatable causes related to poverty during one day of Lent. We completed the cross on Palm Sunday, gluing the last of 15,240 sticks. Please take a moment to look at the cross and reflect on the staggering number of children around the world who suffer from the effects of malnutrition and poor living conditions. Happily, these numbers are changing. By supporting the Millennium Development Goals, we are saving lives. In the same week that we completed the Child Mortality Cross, our church mailed a check to Episcopal Relief and Development in the amount of $5,614.72 to buy mosquito nets for people at risk of contracting malaria. The money was raised through a variety of efforts: Eat In to Help Out, Advent alternative gift giving and individual donations. The money will provide more than 450 insecticide-treated nets and training in their use, and will help limit the spread of a deadly disease.

Episcopal Youth Community

Calling all Youth (6th - 12th grades). EYC will meet early this afternoon to begin set up for the ABC Sale. Please join us in the dining room at 2 pm today. We will move racks, set up tables, and help to set the scene for this amazing Sale. We will work until 4 pm. I have been told the snacks to follow will be great! Service learning hours are available. Saturday April 12 is the long awaited ABC Sale. We are in charge of cooking and selling lunch. Come out and help Chapel of the Cross raise money for some great causes. Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions!

This Week

Episcopal Campus Ministry

All university students are invited to our weekly fellowship and dinner in the campus center Tuesdays at 5:30 pm. This Tuesday Ms. Lee will celebrate a Reconciliation Eucharist.

Awakening Heart

Awakening Heart, the parish contemplative prayer support group, will not meet on Saturday, April 12, due to the ABC Sale. Our next regular meeting will be Saturday, May 10, at 9:00 am in the campus center. Anyone who has a listening prayer practice is invited.

Next Week

Parent Gathering: Feeding our Families, Feeding our Families' Souls

Join parishioners Anne Hoole and Christina Balderson on April 13 when they share ideas for making family meals less stressful and more spiritual. Both Anne and Christina have professional catering experience and both have young children. We will discuss ways to encourage gratitude for the food we have, fit healthy meals around extracurricular activities and enjoy time at the family table.

CROP Walk

The annual CROP walk will be next Sunday afternoon. CROP Walk raises funds to fight hunger and other struggles that poverty-stricken individuals face both at home and abroad. More specifically, a percentage of the money goes directly to the Inter-Faith Council, which is sponsoring the event here in Chapel Hill. Chapel of the Cross will have a team, and the church will also serve as a water stop along the route! If you are interested in volunteering as a walker, contributing money or helping with the water stop, please e-mail Jimmy Satterwhite at jimmysa@alumni.unc.edu. You may also visit the Social Ministry Committee table in the dining room.

Announcements

Cross Roads Distribution

Due to illness - of staff members and printing machines - the April Cross Roads is not yet in your home mailboxes. Expect to receive Cross Roads by mail this week. To avoid such delays and help the parish save on postage and printing costs, please consider viewing our parish newsletter on the web at www.thechapelofthecross.org. You may email a request to be removed from the paper mailing list to vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org or mrogers@thechapelofthecross.org. After receipt of your request, you will receive a monthly notification that Cross Roads is available online. Thank you in advance for making newsletter distribution more affordable and less harmful to the environment.

Emergency Procedure

Emergency procedure instructions for the parish buildings are now posted by the alarm box located in the hallway by the parish office. If you have questions, please see Ron McGill, facilities manager, or call Clare Baum at (call office for number).

ABC Sale Donations

This year's annual ABC Sale will he held Saturday, April 12 and we will begin accepting donations on Monday, April 7. In planning your donations for the ABC Sale, please note that we accept almost any type of merchandise, from furniture to clothing, household items to antiques, books to toys. However, we can not accept torn, dirty or broken items, mattresses, futons, or car seats. Some items do not sell well, such as encyclopedias, textbooks, computers, typewriters, large appliances, exercise equipment, over-sized furniture and artificial Christmas trees. If you have a question about an item, please ask us first, and if we cannot accept it, we have a list of agencies that might take some of these items, including names and numbers if you need them. Co-chairs Heather Benjamin (942-2449 or habenjam@bellsouth.net and Mindy Morton (call office for number or mortons04@nc.rr.com) are available in the dining room between the Sunday morning services to encourage your participation and answer any questions you might have!

ABC Bake Sale Volunteers

Thank you to all those who have volunteered to bake things for the ABC Sale Bake Shop. If you haven't already volunteered, please feel free to bring something (cakes, pies, quiches, coffee cakes, savory items, etc.) on the day before the sale - Friday, April 11, between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to the campus center for pricing. We cannot accept things on the morning of the sale as there is insufficient time to price them before the doors open. Thanks, again!

Web-Site Team Needs Extra Hands

The team of parishioners that has been updating the design of the parish web-site is nearing the completion of its task. We now need three or four more parishioners to join the team that keeps the web-site content up to date by posting Sunday Announcements, Cross Roads, vestry minutes, sermons, etc. Experience working with web sites is desirable, but anyone comfortable with computers would be able to do this work. Team members work in rotation and time requirements have flexibility. If you have interest in helping with this particular parish ministry, please contact Websexton Dwight Smith (DwightSmith@nc.rr.com) or Communications Coordinator Vivian Varner (vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org).

Young Adults Lunch and Post-Compline Refreshments

Our Young Adults group is meeting for lunch this week after the 11:15, as we do most weeks. All graduate and professional students and other young adults, are welcome! We also head out to Franklin Street for church-sponsored refreshments after the weekly 9:30 Sunday night Compline service. Contact John Derrick, jd@unc.edu, for further information.

Vacation Church School

Vacation church school registration forms are being accepted now for parish children ages 4 - fifth grade. VCS will be held June 23-27 from 9:00-12:00. Teachers, occasional volunteers and teen helpers are needed. Please find registration forms on the table outside the Christian Formation office. Questions and offers to help can be directed to Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 ext. 37.

Godly Play Training

On Sept. 11-13 Chapel of the Cross will be hosting a three-day training session for people interested in becoming Godly Play storytellers. This is a rare opportunity to become an accredited Godly Play storyteller free of charge (training usually costs $360 per person). Space is limited to 24 participants and the training is open to the public. Because we expect spaces to fill quickly, we want to reserve spots now for any interested parishioners. Please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org to register.

Stewardship Opportunities

Our Freezer Is Bare

Help is needed in replenishing our freezer with nutritious casseroles and soups which are delivered to parishioners in need. Please freeze in small portions, label the ingredients and date your dish. These can go into the freezer in the dishwasher room. If you have questions or if you or someone you know needs food, please contact the parish office.

Updated List of IFC Needs

At the end of March, the most urgent needs of the IFC Food Pantry were as follows: dry cereal; spaghetti (dry pasta); cans of spaghetti sauce, pork and beans and soup; tea and coffee; travel-sized toiletry items; and paper bags with handles. Thank you to the children of the parish for their first Sunday food collections, and to all parishioners for continuing weekly contributions of food items.

The Johnson Interns Need Your Help!

Please donate new and gently used t-shirts, athletic shorts, socks and sneakers to the marked box in the dining room. Items will benefit participants of PACE, Chapel Hill's first walking group for homeless shelter residents. PACE (Physical Activity Creating Empowerment) cultivates relationships and empowers shelter residents to improve their overall health and wellness through their dedication to walking as a team. The insatiable power of the human spirit unites us as we move forward one step at a time.
