Announcements

ABC Sale Results

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's ABC SALE a huge success! We were able to raise over $31,200 in sales due to the countless hours of work and truckloads of quality goods. With the generous donations from our parishioners, we also collected $1,200 which helped reduce our expenses and will allow us to give more of the sale profits to the local charities in need. We were also able to provide many bags of goods to Habitat for Humanity, the Caring and Sharing Center, and Thrift World. People from Orange House (AIDS House), Friends of DSS, Freedom House, Oxford House, Homestart, Global Missions, Orange County Family Resource Center, Prison Ministry, and our church-sponsored Burmese families were able to shop directly for items that they needed for free. Parishioners also collected unsold clothing items for Iraqi hospitalized children and stuffed animals for our local police force to use in child related cases. Thank you to the entire Chapel of the Cross family for reaching out and making a difference for so many people!

Sunday Morning Church School

This is a reminder to children, youth and their parents that church school is in session almost every Sunday from 10:20-11:05am during the church school year (our last church school class this year will be held May 18). Teachers volunteer their time and energy to prepare and teach these classes. Students should try to be on time so as not to disrupt a lesson already in progress. Parents should establish guidelines with their children regarding expectations during this hour. Any child who is not attending church school is assumed to be under the supervision of his or her parents or guardians.

Thank You, Teachers

Our Church School teachers have done a marvelous job this year of supporting and guiding our children's spiritual growth. To thank them, the Children and Family Ministry Committee will be accepting flowers on May 4 to turn into gift bouquets. Even if you do not have children in the church school program, please consider bringing flowers to the dining room before the 9:00 service. Members of the CFM committee will have vases ready and will arrange the bouquets and deliver them to all the teachers as a thank you from the parish.

Request from Jr. Girl Scount Troop 378

Jr. Girl Scout Troop 378 is collecting personal hygiene items for the teenagers at the Oxford Children's Orphanage. There will be a collection box near the IFC donation bins in the back of the church where you can put these items if you wish.

Cross Roads Distribution

To avoid delays in delivery and to help the parish save on postage and printing costs, please consider viewing Cross Roads, our parish newsletter on the web at www.thechapelofthecross.org/croads/archives/archives.html. Paper copies of Cross Roads will still be made avaibable to those who prefer that format. You may also email a request to be removed from the paper mailing list to vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org or mrogers@thechapelofthecross.org. After receipt of your request, you will receive a monthly notification that Cross Roads is available online. Thank you for making newsletter distribution more affordable and less harmful to the environment.

Food Hospitality for Funeral Receptions

If you have a little time to give for preparing some baked goods for funeral receptions, please call the parish office at 929-2193 and leave your contact information. Coordinators will be in touch with you as the need arises. Thanks in advance for this important work in the parish family.

Web Site Assistance

The web site committee is searching for additional volunteers familiar with HTML and/or web editors to help complete the transition from our current site to a "new and improved" version and to keep the new version up to date. Committee members work in rotation posting Sunday Announcements, Cross Roads, vestry minutes, sermons, and other parish information. If you are able to help with this part of our parish's ministry, please contact Websexton Dwight Smith (DwightSmith@nc.rr.com) or Communications Coordinator Vivian Harris Varner (vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org).

Vacation Church School

Vacation Church School needs two lead teachers! Please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 ext 37 if you are interested. A detailed curriculum will be provided. With the help of teen assistants, lead teachers establish a welcoming classroom, review the day's story and guide children through the morning's centers. Registration forms for young parishioners who want to attend VCS are available outside the Christian Formation office. VCS will be held June 23-27 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.

2008 UNC Baccalaureate

Students and their families are invited to the 2008 Baccalaureate Ceremony on Saturday, May 10 at 3:00 pm in Great Hall at the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. The Baccalaureate is an interfaith service celebrating commencement and is hosted by the Campus Ministers' Association and the Office of New Student & Carolina Parent Programs. For more information call 962-8304.

Godly Play Training

On Sept. 11-13 Chapel of the Cross will be hosting a three-day training session for people interested in becoming Godly Play storytellers. This is a rare opportunity to become an accredited Godly Play storyteller free of charge (training usually costs $360 per person). Space is limited to 24 participants and the training is open to the public. Because we expect spaces to fill quickly, we want to reserve spots now for any interested parishioners. Please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org to register.

Stewardship Opportunities

Our Freezer Is Bare

Help is needed in replenishing our freezer with nutritious casseroles and soups which are delivered to parishioners in need. Please freeze in small portions, label the ingredients and date your dish. These can go into the freezer in the dishwasher room. If you have questions or if you or someone you know needs food, please contact the parish office.

Updated List of IFC Needs

At the end of March, the most urgent needs of the IFC Food Pantry were as follows: dry cereal; spaghetti (dry pasta); cans of spaghetti sauce, pork and beans and soup; tea and coffee; travel-sized toiletry items; and paper bags with handles. Thank you to the children of the parish for their first Sunday food collections, and to all parishioners for continuing weekly contributions of food items.

The Johnson Interns Need Your Help!

Please donate new and gently used t-shirts, athletic shorts, socks and sneakers to the marked box in the dining room. Items will benefit participants of PACE, Chapel Hill's first walking group for homeless shelter residents. PACE (Physical Activity Creating Empowerment) cultivates relationships and empowers shelter residents to improve their overall health and wellness through their dedication to walking as a team. The insatiable power of the human spirit unites us as we move forward one step at a time.

Community Notes

The Orange Sponsoring Committee

Orange Sponsoring Committee, a community organizing group that intends to address critical issues in our area (i.e., the need for livable, affordable housing, equality in education, and adequate mental health services) will hold its first public Assembly on Sunday afternoon, April 27 at 3:00 pm at the Faith Tabernacle on Rogers Road. As a member of the Orange Sponsoring Committee, the good people of Chapel of the Cross can support this Assembly by showing up. Our presence is very important, since the number of people who turn out will make it evident to public officials, who will be attending the Assembly, that we are serious about improving the quality of life in this area for all residents. If you can attend, please contact Susannah Smith (call church office for number or email sr-smith@mindspring.com ) or Peggy Pratt (call church office for number or email pegpratt@nc.rr.com ) for details.

Duke Laity Weekend

Duke Laity weekend is an opportunity for laity of all communions to cultivate their faith through focused study of spiritual formation, theology, Christian tradition, history, and scripture. The event's theme is "Forgiving Our Enemies: The Test of True Faith" with keynote speaker Dr. J. Warren Smith. It takes place April 25-26. For tuition information call (call office for number) or visit www.divinity.duke.edu/laityweekend.
