Episcopal Youth Community
Join us for EYC tonight! We will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the basement. Please wear comfortable, active clothes - if the weather allows we will be out and about. EYC meets most weeks from 5:30-7:30 pm for fellowship, fun, and food. All 6th through 12th graders are invited to join us for fellowship, food, and fun! Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions!
Young Adults Lunch and Post-Compline Refreshments
Our Young Adults group is meeting for lunch this week after the 11:15, as we do most weeks. All graduate and professional students and other young adults, are welcome! We also head out to Franklin Street for church-sponsored refreshments after the weekly 9:30 Sunday night Compline service. Contact John Derrick, jd@unc.edu, for further information.
The Orange Sponsoring Committee
Orange Sponsoring Committee, a community organizing group that intends to address critical issues in our area (i.e., the need for livable, affordable housing, equality in education, and adequate mental health services) will hold its first public Assembly this afternoon at 3:00 pm at the Faith Tabernacle on Rogers Road. As a member of the Orange Sponsoring Committee, the good people of Chapel of the Cross can support this Assembly by showing up. Our presence is very important, since the number of people who turn out will make it evident to public officials, who will be attending the Assembly, that we are serious about improving the quality of life in this area for all residents. If you can attend, please contact Susannah Smith (call church office for number or email sr-smith@mindspring.com ) or Peggy Pratt (call church office for number or email pegpratt@nc.rr.com ) for details.

Thank you, Teachers
Our church school teachers have done a wonderful job of helping our children's faith grow this year. To thank them, the Children and Family Ministry will be collecting flowers next Sunday before the 9:00 service. Please bring flowers to the dining room, where committee members will arrange them into bouquets.
Internet Sense and Safety
Please join us next Sunday to hear Officer Bryan Walker from the Chapel Hill Police Department discuss safe and sensible use of the internet. Parish Notes
Sunday Morning Church School
This is a reminder to children, youth and their parents that church school is in session almost every Sunday from 10:20-11:05am during the church school year (our last church school class this year will be held May 18). Teachers volunteer their time and energy to prepare and teach these classes. Students should try to be on time so as not to disrupt a lesson already in progress. Parents should establish guidelines with their children regarding expectations during this hour. Any child who is not attending church school is assumed to be under the supervision of his or her parents or guardians.
Request from Jr. Girl Scount Troop 378
Jr. Girl Scout Troop 378 is collecting personal hygiene items for the teenagers at the Oxford Children's Orphanage. There will be a collection box near the IFC donation bins in the back of the church where you can put these items if you wish.
Cross Roads Distribution
To avoid delays in delivery and to help the parish save on postage and printing costs, please consider viewing Cross Roads, our parish newsletter on the web at www.thechapelofthecross.org/croads/archives/archives.html. Paper copies of Cross Roads will still be made avaibable to those who prefer that format. You may also email a request to be removed from the paper mailing list to vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org or mrogers@thechapelofthecross.org. After receipt of your request, you will receive a monthly notification that Cross Roads is available online. Thank you for making newsletter distribution more affordable and less harmful to the environment.
Food Hospitality for Funeral Receptions
If you have a little time to give for preparing some baked goods for funeral receptions, please call the parish office at 929-2193 and leave your contact information. Coordinators will be in touch with you as the need arises. Thanks in advance for this important work in the parish family.
Web Site Assistance
The web site committee is searching for additional volunteers familiar with HTML and/or web editors to help complete the transition from our current site to a "new and improved" version and to keep the new version up to date. Committee members work in rotation posting Sunday Announcements, Cross Roads, vestry minutes, sermons, and other parish information. If you are able to help with this part of our parish's ministry, please contact Websexton Dwight Smith (DwightSmith@nc.rr.com) or Communications Coordinator Vivian Harris Varner (vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org).

Godly Play Training
On Sept. 11-13 Chapel of the Cross will be hosting a three-day training session for people interested in becoming Godly Play storytellers. This is a rare opportunity to become an accredited Godly Play storyteller free of charge (training usually costs $360 per person). Space is limited to 24 participants and the training is open to the public. Because we expect spaces to fill quickly, we want to reserve spots now for any interested parishioners. Please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org to register.
Stewardship Opportunities
Sponsors Needed for our Refugee Students
Tin Tin Win and Sein Lah, our two high schoolers, have an opportunity to visit Williamsburg VA with their chorus where they will perform. They each need to raise a sum of $30 - $130 dollars for this trip. This would be a very wonderful opportunity for them to travel with this group, perform, and see a bit of Williamsburg. We are looking for sponsors for them or to provide work for them to pay their way. Sein Lah is great doing yard work. Tin Tin Win can do ironing. Please consider helping them reach their goal by mid-May. Contact Barbara Tremblay (call church office for number) or Gale Gilchrist (call church office for number) for more information.
Our Freezer Is Bare
Help is needed in replenishing our freezer with nutritious casseroles and soups which are delivered to parishioners in need. Please freeze in small portions, label the ingredients and date your dish. These can go into the freezer in the dishwasher room. If you have questions or if you or someone you know needs food, please contact the parish office.
The Johnson Interns Need Your Help!
Please donate new and gently used t-shirts, athletic shorts, socks and sneakers to the marked box in the dining room. Items will benefit participants of PACE, Chapel Hill's first walking group for homeless shelter residents. PACE (Physical Activity Creating Empowerment) cultivates relationships and empowers shelter residents to improve their overall health and wellness through their dedication to walking as a team. The insatiable power of the human spirit unites us as we move forward one step at a time.
Community Notes
Bible Study and Hymn Sing at Stratford Assisted Living
Looking for a lively devotional experience during the week? Thursdays at 10:30 am a group of twenty or so residents at Stratford Assisted Living gather for prayer, bible study, and songs. This group began at the instigation of a parishioner who at the time was a resident at the Stratford. Though no longer there, she returns weekly with Vicky Jamieson-Drake for prayers, a short reflection on scripture, and singing of folk hymns accompanied by guitar. Call or email Vicky at vjd@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 if you’re interested in assisting with this ministry.
Breast Cancer Support Group
Project Compassion is forming a support team to help with the needs of a relative of a parishioner being treated for breast cancer. No contribution of time is too small. For more information please contact Sonja Norris at Project Compassion at 402-1844 or Vicky Jamieson-Drake 929-2193.
