Adult Education Next Week

There will be no Adult Education due to Pentecost, Mother's Day and UNC graduation.

Today

Thompson's Child & Family Focus Summer Clothing Drive!

Please stop by the table in the dining room today and pick up a heart (or two!) for one of our sponsored children. Buy the items listed and return them to the parish office, unwrapped, by Sunday, June 8. This year, we have a great need for khaki shorts, polo shirts, sneakers, and short socks, along with gift cards from department stores. Please help our efforts -- your generosity will make a tremendous impact on the summer experience of our sponsored children!

Thank You, Teachers

Our church school teachers have done a wonderful job of helping our children's faith grow this year. To thank them, the Children and Family Ministry will be collecting flowers today before the 9:00 service. Please bring flowers to the dining room, where committee members will arrange them into bouquets.

Internet Sense And Safety

Please join us today in the chapel to learn about Internet sense and safety. Officer Bryan Walker of the Chapel Hill Police Department specializes in Internet crimes, especially those involving young people. He speaks regularly about smart and safe use of the computer.

You may join us for the whole meeting or feel free to come in at 2:00 pm to hear our speaker's presentation.

Penick Village Offering

Penick Village is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Located in Southern Pines, Penick Village is named in honor of Bishop Edwin Anderson Penick. In 1957, the Diocese of North Carolina made a commitment to raise money on Mother's Day to successfully build The Episcopal Home for the Aging. Since that time, Mother's Day has been designated as an opportunity to support this vital ministry at Penick Village. The 2008 Mother's Day Offering will directly support residents who are living above their means. Envelopes will be available the pews next Sunday. For more information on the ministry of Penick Village, please feel free to contact the Development Office at 910-692-0381. Thank you for your support.

Announcements

Last Church School Class, May 18

The last church school classes of the year will be held May 18. Today, we are thanking all of our wonderful teachers with bouquets of flowers created by parishioners.

Vacation Church School Open To Public

Vacation Church School registration is now open to the general public. Registration forms can be found outside the Christian Formation Office. If your children or grandchildren have school friends or neighbors who want to attend, please encourage them to register. VCS will be held June 23-27. Questions about the program may be directed to Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 ext. 37.

Heifer International Plaques

Last Sunday during the 9:00 service, Dr. Sam Galphin, a Raleigh Veterinarian who volunteers with both Christian Veterinary Missions and Heifer International, presented our parish with two plaques that represent the "arks" of animals we have given to needy families around the world each of the last two years. The plaques are currently displayed in the dining room.

The Face Of Christ: The Imprisoned

We are asked in the Baptismal Covenant if we will "seek and serve Christ in all people." If we promise to do this, are we able to think of the imprisoned as our neighbors whom we are called to love? This year, about 250 inmates in Orange County will be discharged by the N.C. Department of Correction (DOC). The DOC is not funded to the extent that it can adequately prepare inmates for release into society. Little is done by the prison system to provide education, rehabilitation or addiction management. On May 18, Chaplain Ken Barker and parishioner Terry Johnston will explain how they help prisoners prepare for their freedom.

Request From Jr. Girl Scout Troop 378

Jr. Girl Scout Troop 378 is collecting personal hygiene items for the teenagers at the Oxford Children's Orphanage. There will be a collection box near the IFC donation bins in the back of the church where you can put these items if you wish.

Food Hospitality For Funeral Receptions

If you have a little time to give for preparing some baked goods for funeral receptions, please call the parish office at 929-2193 and leave your contact information. Coordinators will be in touch with you as the need arises. Thanks in advance for this important work in the parish family.

Web-Site Team Needs Extra Hands

The web site committee is searching for additional volunteers familiar with HTML and/or web editors to help complete the transition from our current site to a "new and improved" version and to keep the new version up to date. Committee members work in rotation posting Sunday Announcements, Cross Roads, vestry minutes, sermons, and other parish information. If you are able to help with this part of our parish's ministry, please contact Websexton Dwight Smith (DwightSmith@nc.rr.com) or Communications Coordinator Vivian Varner (vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org).

Stewardship Opportunities

IFC News

On Saturday, May 10, we can all participate in the nation's largest one-day food collection, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. It's as easy as filling a bag with nonperishable foods and leaving it next to our mailbox. Local beneficiaries are the IFC Food Pantry and Orange Congregations in Mission. The IFC is also seeking volunteers with SUVs or trucks to help transport this food. If you'd like to help, call Kristin Lavergne, Community Services Director, at 929-6380, ex.41. Parishioner Elizabeth Spencer is featured in the "Donor Profile" in the spring issue of "IFC News." This gracious lady and talented writer has shared her time and financial resources with the IFC for many years. She is quoted in the article as saying, "I would like to say to others, 'Help, HELP' -- in big letters. I hope that a lot of people will give their time, money, and interest to the IFC because we have a really good thing going on here."

Sponsors Needed For Our Refugee Students

Tin Tin Win and Sein Lah, our two high schoolers, have an opportunity to visit Williamsburg VA with their chorus where they will perform. They each need to raise a sum of $30 - $130 dollars for this trip. This would be a very wonderful opportunity for them to travel with this group, perform, and see a bit of Williamsburg. We are looking for sponsors for them or to provide work for them to pay their way. Sein Lah is great doing yard work. Tin Tin Win can do ironing. Please consider helping them reach their goal by mid-May. Contact Barbara Tremblay (call office for number) or Gale Gilchrist (call office for number) for more information.

The Johnson Interns Need Your Help!

Please donate new and gently used t-shirts, athletic shorts, socks and sneakers to the marked box in the dining room. Items will benefit participants of PACE, Chapel Hill's first walking group for homeless shelter residents. PACE (Physical Activity Creating Empowerment) cultivates relationships and empowers shelter residents to improve their overall health and wellness through their dedication to walking as a team. The insatiable power of the human spirit unites us as we move forward one step at a time.

Community Notes

Leadership Training By The Orange Sponsoring Committee

The Orange Sponsoring Committee (OSC) held its first public assembly last Sunday with over 200 attendees from 23 churches and organizations along with 20 parishioners from Chapel of the Cross. It was an exciting beginning for this organizing group that intends to address critical issues in our area. We hope as this effort moves forward many more will become involved. The OSC is conducting two sessions to train members of its sponsoring organizations (which includes the Chapel of the Cross) to learn how to use relational power effectively when taking stands on community issues that affect the wellbeing of Orange County residents. Both trainings are at 7:00 pm in Chapel Hill. The dates and locations are: May 8, Barbee Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 5916 Barbee's Chapel Rd.; and May 15, Chapel Hill Kehillah, 1200 Mason Farm Road. If you are interested contact Susannah Smith (call office for number or sr-smith@mindspring.com or Peggy Pratt (call office for number or pegpratt@nc.rr.com).

Bible Study And Hymn Sing At Stratford Assisted Living

Looking for a lively devotional experience during the week? Thursdays at 10:30 am a group of twenty or so residents at Stratford Assisted Living gather for prayer, Bible study, and songs. This group began at the instigation of a parishioner who at the time was a resident at the Stratford. Though no longer there, she returns weekly with Vicky Jamieson-Drake for prayers, a short reflection on scripture, and singing of folk hymns accompanied by guitar. Call or email Vicky at vjd@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 if you're interested in assisting with this ministry.

Breast Cancer Support Group

Project Compassion is forming a support team to help with the needs of a relative of a parishioner being treated for breast cancer. No contribution of time is too small. For more information please contact Sonja Norris at Project Compassion at 402-1844 or Vicky Jamieson-Drake 929-2193.

The Church Of The Advocate

The Advocate: An Episcopal Mission sponsored by the Chapel of the Cross, invites one and all to join in the liturgy Sundays at 5 pm Holy Eucharist at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, on the corner of Mason Farm Road and Purefoy Road. For more information, see: www.ouradvocate.org.

Chapel Hill Community Chorus

The Chapel Hill Community Chorus will present its spring concert on Saturday, May 17, at 8:00 pm at Memorial Hall on the UNC campus. Directed by Dr. Sue Klausmeyer, the group will present Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for students and are available at the door or from chorus members. Several parishioners sing with this group.
