Announcements
A Message from the Treasurer
The fvast majority of expenses for Chapel of the Cross are fixed and in many cases, like utilities, are increasing. Our year-to-date pledge receipts are almost $29,000 lower than last year and the traditionally slower summer months are right around the corner. As your Treasurer, I ask that we work together toward reversing this trend. Let's catch up for missed pledges as soon as possible and make a conscious effort to balance payments over the summer. In doing so, the parish can operate according to budget and continue our many wonderful ministries without hesitation. - Gary L. Monroe
Brian Clemens Memorial Golf Tournament
Under the leadership of Peggy and Ted Pratt, our parish captured the Clemens Cup given to the congregation with the most golfers in this fund-raiser for the IFC. Chris Moran, Executive Director of the IFC, presented the engraved cup to the vestry at its May 15 meeting. The tournament raised over $15,000 for Community House, the IFC residential facility for men, the only men's shelter serving Orange County.
Bike & Build
Thirty young adults with a group called Bike & Build are bicycling into Chapel Hill Tuesday on their journey across the US. The cyclists, many of whom are UNC students, will spend their summer traveling from Nags Head, NC to La Jolla, CA, raising money and awareness for affordable housing causes. 80% of their raised funds this summer will be donated to Orange County Habitat for Humanity and our Partnership. Bike and Build's three day stop is scheduled from Tuesday, May 27, to Friday, May 30. The Chapel of the Cross, as part of our Habitat Partnership, will again this year be housing them in the building and providing their meals. We invite you to join them for dinner at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 28, to hear about their trip and about affordable housing efforts in Orange County. If you are able to join us, please bring a dish to share. If you would like to provide food for the riders to snack on or add to their breakfasts, lunch or suppers while they are here, please put it in the kitchen labeled for "Bike and Build." For more information about the trip see bikeandbuild.org or contact Jean DeSaix jdesaix@email.unc.edu or (call office for number).
Teen Helpers Needed for VCS
Teens, we need your help in Vacation Church School, which will be held from June 23-27. Please contact Boykin Bell at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 ext. 37 if you are interested in helping for one day or the whole week. VCS runs from 9:00 am to noon.
Parish Freezer
Thank you to the many who kindly prepared nutritious soups and casseroles to be distributed to parishioners in need. We now have a good supply and variety of foods. If you planned to make something and hadn't yet, consider holding off for a few months when we will again want to add items. If you or someone in the parish you know could use some prepared food to tuck in your freezer or pop in the oven, please contact the office. They will alert the Good Samaritan coordinator. Thank you for your responsiveness and willingness to help.
Boy Scout Troop 9 Honors
Parish sponsored Boy Scout Troop 9 earned best overall troop at the recent Orange County District Jamboree - for the third year in a row! The scouts earned points for participation in various events, running demonstrations for younger Cub Scouts, and for their camping skills. Troop 9 is a smaller troop relative to the district and this award shows the high quality of the program. Please congratulate the scouts and the leaders. Troop 9 meets on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm. For more information visit www.t9ch.org or contact Gregg Gerdau, Scoutmaster, at gregg@gdgerdau.com.

Stewardship Opportunities
Episcopal Relief And Development (ERD)
We all know of the truly devasting cyclone that struck Myanmar (Burma) and the equally devastating earthquake in China. Because of the difficulties getting aid workers into Myanmar, ERD is relying on its partners on the ground, the Anglican Church of the Province of Myanmar (CPM) and the Myanmar Council of Churches, to assess needs and resources as well as to distribute food aid provided by ERD. In China, heavy rain, power outages and impassable roads have slowed rescue work. ERD's partner in China, the Amity Foundation, an independent Chinese Christian voluntary organization, has deployed staff and is coordinating efforts with local partners. With ERD support, it has distributed rice, bedding and sheltering material. The immediate need is for cash so that ERD and its partners will have the resources to purchase and distribute aid to the people affected. Donations can be made in many ways. Give online to ERD's "Emergency Relief Fund" at www.er-d.org. Call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129. Mail gifts to: Episcopal Relief and Development "Emergency Relief Fund" P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
Community Notes
CROP Walk Report
Thanks to Jimmy Satterwhite and Teddy Lovejoy for organizing our parish team for the CROP Walk this year and for raising a considerable amount of money for the walk themselves, some of it by using the new online option. Totals for this year are still being compiled, but the IFC reports that the 2008 walk raised over $57,000, which means that the money raised since the beginning of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro CROP Walk has passed the million dollar mark.
Triangle Presbyterian Preschool & Kindergarten
Are you looking for a preschool or a ½ day Kindergarten? TPPK has openings for the Fall in our Pre K and Kindergarten classes. We are a Christian School with a wonderful, caring, and loving staff! Contact Nicolette at 544-2872 or at NicoletteGranata@trianglepc.org.
Bible Study and Hymn Sing at Stratford Assisted Living
Looking for a lively devotional experience during the week? Thursdays at 10:30 am a group of twenty or so residents at Stratford Assisted Living gather for prayer, Bible study, and songs. This group began at the instigation of a parishioner who at the time was a resident at the Stratford. Though no longer there, she returns weekly with Vicky Jamieson-Drake for prayers, a short reflection on scripture, and singing of folk hymns accompanied by guitar. Call or email Vicky at vjd@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 if you're interested in assisting with this ministry.
Breast Cancer Support Group
Project Compassion is forming a support team to help with the needs of a relative of a parishioner being treated for breast cancer. No contribution of time is too small. For more information please contact Sonja Norris at Project Compassion at (call office for number) or Vicky Jamieson-Drake 929-2193.
