Next Step Committee
Chapel of the Cross
Feb. 13, 2005
Attending: Committee members Paul Carew, Terry Eason, Linda Rimer, Barbara Schutz, Rob Sullivan, Ted Vaden, Robert Wright. Ex officio, John McGee Absent: Jay Bryan, Martha Dill, ex officio Dick Taylor, Stephen Elkins-Williams.
Ted Vaden called the meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. He noted to committee members that he would give a report on Next Step Committee at the Annual Meeting on Feb. 20 and solicited their input for the report.
Program Review Committee: Rob Sullivan reported that the committee has compiled a roster of activities at Chapel of the Cross, running 9 pages in a spreadsheet. That information can be used to inform the planning consultants as they consider program for space design. We asked the committee to also review programs to see whether existing programs fit mission statement, whether there are programs we should have that are missing. Robert noted that a trend encouraged by the Diocese of churches collaborating on programs and said Chapel of the Cross might be looked to as a leader in such efforts.
Communication: We noted concern among some parish organizations, notable the Building and Grounds Committee, of being left out of the planning process. We agreed it is important to be inclusive and solicit as much input as possible from parish organizations. Ted suggested that a future meeting be devoted to hearing from committees, including Building and Grounds, Finance, Personnel and Financial Stewardship. Linda encouraged us to communicate more with parish about our progress and use the word “exploratory” to characterize our work so far. Ted noted that we did make a report in the Annual Report. We agreed to take these steps to communicate further:
- Invite other committees to a Next Step meeting.
- Report our progress regularly in Crossings.
- Provide an adult ed session on Next Step.
- Post Next Step minutes on the website.
Liturgical Review: Terry and Robert, members of the Rector’s Liturgical Advisory Committee, said the group has not focused on the long-range planning recommendations regarding services and other worship-related matters. The Next Step Committee asked them to remind the advisory committee of that responsibility.
Facilities: The committee discussed the visits to St. Paul’s, Winston-Salem, and St. Peter’s, Charlotte, as well as previous visits to Raleigh and Chapel Hill churches. Terry felt we were in position to proceed with selecting planning consultants. Ted asked Terry to chair a subcommittee to interview applicants, and the subcommittee will consist of Barbara Schutz, John McGee, Robert Wright, Linda Rimer, Paul Carew and Rob Sullivan. It was also suggested that the subcommittee include George Evans, chair of Building and Grounds, and Paul will carry that suggestion to the Wardens Meeting.
The committee tentatively agreed to contact the following firms to schedule interviews:
Ann Beha Architects of Boston, Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, WGM Design of Charlotte, and Marianna Thomas Architects of Philadelphia. (WGM did the Good Shepherd and St. Peter’s projects; Marianna Thomas did St. Paul’s.) The estimated expense costs for interviews is $2,000 to $3,000, and Paul and John will follow up to secure funding.
The subcommittee will attempt to complete interviews in March, and the Next Step Committee will schedule its next meeting thereafter.
