Feb. 6, 2006
(See also this addendum to the Feb. 6 meeting minutes.)
Present: Paul Carew, Reid Conrad, Martha Dill, Terry Eason, John McGee, Linda Rimer, Barbara Schütz, Rob Sullivan, Ted Vaden, Robert Wright; Stephen Elkins-Williams, Matt Poe of Hartman-Cox.
The committee discussed how to make our work available to members of the parish. The committee agreed by consensus to compile in a loose-leaf binder all of the design plans studied so far, along with the plan comparisons and program analyses provided by Rob Sullivan. The notebook will be placed in the office and made available for review by members of the parish. It will include space for comments, and parishioners will be asked to contact Ted Vaden if they have questions or oral comments.
When the committee has completed its review of a draft plan to be recommended to the Vestry and parish, that plan will be posted on the website in advance of the February 26 annual meeting.
The committee will prepare posters for display in the dining room at the annual meeting. Martha and Barbara will complete final drafting of the poster text and Ted will edit. That will be provided to Matt Poe, whose office will prepare the posters for display with the recommended design.
The committee reviewed two alternative designs prepared by Hartman-Cox. One, plan F, aligns the Fellowship Hall on a north-south axis, parallel to the axes of the chapel and church. The other, Plan I, places the Fellowship Hall on an east-west axis, perpendicular to the chapel and church, facing the Morehead Planetarium.
Rob reported that his analysis of the plans showed that Plan F better suited the parish needs. It has slightly more square footage, and it uses space more efficiently for program needs that Plan I.
Members of the committee also felt that the exterior aesthetic of Plan F was more appealing than Plan I in terms of integration with the existing buildings. Given that Plan F was superior in terms of both program needs and exterior design, the clear consensus of the committee was for Plan F.
Matt will refine the plan further and prepare drawings and designs for presentation to the Vestry on Feb. 16. The committee will meet on Feb. 20 to discuss the presentation at the annual meeting.
John McGee agreed to contact Bruce Runberg, UNC’s associate vice chancellor for facilities planning and construction, regarding the feasibility of accessing university property for construction traffic during subsequent phases of the church’s construction project.
