Feb 18, 1982: The Vestry received the Education Committee Report from Bill McGaghie documenting inadequate classroom space in our Parish House.

July 17, 1982: The Vestry received the Yates Wing Floor Feasibility Analysis by Ed Yaggy concluding the addition of another floor was impossible.

Nov 21, 1985: Senior Warden, Joe Ferrell, requested a Space Needs Study for the entire church facility. Vestry approval was given to hire an architect. “The situation is urgent.”

Feb 25, 1986: The Vestry engaged architect Herb McKim of Wilmington to prepare a preliminary study of options to enhance our Parish House.

April 20, 1988: The Space Needs Committee Report submitted to the Vestry described our need for a large Fellowship Hall, more office space and better classrooms.

May 17, 1988: The Vestry Personnel Committee Report envisions the expansion of staff.

May 5, 1989: The Vestry received the Parish Planning Committee Report chaired by Rob Sullivan describing congregation growth, calling for Parish House expansion and construction of a large Fellowship Hall.

May 18, 1989: The Vestry received the Human Services Institute Report calling for significant improvements and major expansion of the Parish House.

Jun 8, 1989: The Vestry authorized a Strategy Committee suggest priorities for building renovations.

Jul 20 1989: Based on the Strategy Committee Report, the Vestry approved a Capital Campaign

Mar 30, 1990: The Vestry received the Capital Campaign Feasibility Study prepared by the campaign consultant, Allen Mac Inc. It documented a diversity of opinion related to age with many older members expressing the wish that the parish “…would not grow or change to any great extent and would, perhaps, remain more like it has been in the past.”

May 8, 1990: The Vestry voted to begin the Generation to Generation Capital Campaign

Apr 1, 1991: Construction began for Parish House renovation and expansion

Apr 1, 1993: Parish House renovations adding three classrooms, two offices and expanding the dining room are now complete.

Oct 30, 1998: The Retire the Debt campaign officially ended.

Aug 16, 2001 The Vestry created a Space Use Study Committee chaired by Carolyn Goldfinch, to review needs for program, administrative and support space for our Parish.

Feb 18 2002: The Vestry received the Space Use Study Committee Report. The greatest need is a large Fellowship Hall. Office, education and student space is inadequate. Security is a grave concern. Our facility lacks graciousness. The Committee called for a professional study of possibilities to enhance our building resources.

Sep 19, 2002: The Vestry established a Long-Range Planning Committee (LRPC) to develop a vision for the future of the Chapel of the Cross and prepare a plan to guide the parish.

Nov 24, 2002: A comprehensive article in Cross Roads announced formation of the LRPC with Bill Daniel as chair to “…lead a parish-wide discernment process.”

Jan 2003 The Cross Roads published an update by the LRPC encouraging congregational input.

Apr 2003 The Cross Roads published an article by the Long-Range Planning Committee reviewing progress and inviting input.

May 15, 2003 The Vestry received a report from the LRPC that is published in the Vestry minutes posted on the website.

July 2003: The Cross Roads published a comprehensive LRPC Interim Report summarizing discussion by each subcommittee. The Facility Subcommittee suggested replacing the exiting Parish House with an entirely new structure. The LRPC scheduled a series of meetings to involve the entire congregation in discussion of our future.

Aug 25, 2003: The parish published reprints of the July 2003 Cross Roads for distribution to interested parishioners and for distribution at all congregation discussion sessions.

Sep 21, 2003: Adult Forum presentation by the LRPC inviting input from the congregation regarding Program and Liturgy. Copies of the July 2003 Cross Roads were distributed.

Sep 24, 2003: Presentation at the Men’s Breakfast by the LRPC inviting input regarding Program, Liturgy and Facilities. Copies of the July 2003 Cross Roads were distributed.

Sep 28, 2003: Adult Forum presentation by the LRPC inviting input from our congregation regarding Facilities. Copies of the July 2003 Cross Roads were distributed. Discussion of Parish House replacement was the major discussion focus.

Oct 5, 2003: Carolina Meadows presentation by the LRPC inviting input from our congregation regarding Program, Liturgy and Facilities. Copies of the July 2003 Cross Roads were distributed.

Oct 12, 2003: Carol Woods presentation by the LRPC inviting input from our congregation regarding Program, Liturgy and Facilities. Copies of the July 2003 Cross Roads were distributed.

Oct 15, 2003: A questionnaire was mailed to members of the congregation asking for assistance in the discernment process. Topics included: 1) Overall function of the parish 2) growth 3) worship 4) program 5) facilities and 6) demographics.

Oct 26, 2003: The Breakfast meeting following the 7:30 AM Sunday Service for presentation by the LRPC inviting input from our congregation regarding Program, Liturgy and Facilities. Copies of the July 2003 Cross Roads were distributed.

Oct 26, 2003: Potluck Supper held following the 5:15 PM Service by LRPC inviting input from our congregation regarding Program, Liturgy and Facilities. Copies of the July 2003 Cross Roads were distributed.

May 16, 2004: The Vestry received the LRPC Report recommending that our Parish House be replaced with a new structure to support present and future Parish Programs. Minutes are posted on the website.

Jun 17, 2004: Vestry focus session addressed the LRPC recommendation that the existing Parish Hall be replaced with an entirely new structure. Minutes are posted on the website.

Jul 2004 Cross Roads devoted to the LRPC report calling for a large Fellowship Hall and razing the Battle and Yates buildings to achieve an entirely new vision of our parish ministry.

Sep 16, 2004 The Vestry created the Next Steps Committee (NSC) chaired by Ted Vaden to carry out the recommendations of the LRPC.

Oct 31, 2004: NSC committee meeting with minutes is posted on the website.

Nov 8, 2004: The Vestry created Program Review Committee (PRC) chaired by Rob Sullivan to envision the Parish Program. This will be critical for understanding the architectural requirements for Parish House replacement.

Nov 21, 2004: NSC committee meeting with minutes posted on the website.

Dec 19, 2004: NSC committee meeting with minutes posted on the website.

Jan 9, 2005: NSC visit to University Presbyterian and University Baptist Churches in Chapel Hill to view recent facility expansion projects and discuss cost and funding.

Jan 10, 2005: NSC visit to Good Shepherd in Raleigh to view facility expansion and discuss cost and funding. Summary of findings is posted on the website.

Feb 5, 2005: NSC visit to St. Paul’s Winston-Salem and St. Peter’s Charlotte to view recent facility expansion and discuss cost and funding. Summary is posted on website.

Feb 13, 2005: NSC committee meeting with minutes posted on the website. NSC agreed to use the information from the PRC to inform the planning consultants about Parish Program.

April 21, 2005: NSC Presentation to Vestry focus session regarding selection of an architect. The PRC Interim Report for use in architectural planning was accepted by the Vestry. Minutes with NSC recommendations and PRC report are posted on the parish website.

May 7, 2005: Interim NSC report presented at the Vestry retreat. Minutes of the retreat are published on the Parish website.

May 19, 2005 The Vestry approved Hartman-Cox architectural firm to work with the NSC. The vestry discussed the master plan process at length. Minutes are on the parish website.

Jun 1, 2005: NSC met with the Buildings and Grounds Committee to ascertain needs for physical plant design.

June 5 2005: Adult Education presentation by NSC at 10:15 to ascertain needs for physical plant design. Meeting was announced in Crossings & posted on website.

Jun 30, 2005: NSC members met former Wardens of the Chapel of the Cross to discuss physical design.

July 2005 The Cross Roads published a comprehensive progress report of the NSC progress. The Senior Warden Editorial underscored NSC communication efforts and called for input.

Sep 8, 2005: The NSC asked the Vestry to appoint a Stewardship Formation committee to direct a fund-raising analysis in concert with the building design.

Sep 18, 2005: Announcement in Crossings and posted on website of a meeting on Oct 2 to introduce Hartman-Cox to the congregation and comment on building options.

Sep 25, 2005: A second announcement in Crossings and posted on website of information meeting Oct 2 to meet Hartman Cox architects and comment on building options.

Oct 2005 Cross Roads included an announcement of meetings on Oct 2 at 10:20 AM and 1 PM with a request for attendance and comment regarding building options.

Oct 2, 2005: Announcement in Crossings and posted on website of information meetings for the parish Oct 2 to meet Hartman Cox and comment on building options.

Oct 2, 2005 at two Adult Education sessions at 10:20 AM and 1 PM, the NSC introduced Hartman-Cox and encouraged discussed Parish House options. Sketches were on display.

Oct 2005 Announcement in Cross Roads of parish meeting for congregation input Dec 4 and invitation to join the NSC for a tour Sunday, Nov 13th of Duke Divinity School addition designed by Hartman-Cox.

Nov 13, 2005: NSC and interested members of the congregation tour the Duke Divinity School addition.

Nov 17, 2005: The NSC presented an update at Vestry Focus Session meeting. The need to replace the entire Parish House with a new structure was emphasized as the only option to sustain our parish program. Minutes of the session are posted on the website.

Nov 20, 2005: The NSC met with the church staff to discuss the building plans being considered.

Dec 4, 2005: NSC presented the six plans for discussion to an overflow crowd at the Adult Education hour in the Chapel after the 9:15 service and an equally large gathering after the 11:15 service. Replacement received prominent attention and discussion.

Dec 13, 2005: The NSC discussed pre-kindergarten facility requirements with Jennifer James, Program Coordinator, Orange County Partnership for Young Children.

Jan 9, 2006: Meeting of NSC with committee minutes posted on parish website.

Jan 19, 2006: The Vestry accepted the PRC Interim Report as a guide for the NSC architect working on design requirements to accommodate our parish programs. Minutes are posted on the website.

Jan 23, 2006: Meeting of NSC with minutes posted on Parish website. The Committee decided to present a single plan to the Vestry to replace the entire Parish Hall with a new structure.

Feb 5, 2006: Announcement in the Crossings and posted on website of the plan to present one plan to the Vestry that will replace the entire existing Parish House. Meetings will be held to receive comments from the congregation prior to a final recommendation to the Vestry in May.

Feb 6, 2006: NSC meeting at which a specific plan to replace the existing Parish House was selected. Minutes and Betsy Pringle’s resignation letter from the NSC are posted on the web.

Feb 16, 2006: The NSC presented the Vestry the plan to replace the Parish House with a new building. Minutes of this comprehensive focus session discussion are on the website.

Feb 19, 2006: Announcement in Crossings and posted on the web of the NSC presentation at the Annual Meeting with invitation for parishioners to attend and comment on the plan to replace the Parish House with an entirely new structure. A notebook with all designs considered is available for view and comment in the church office.

Feb 20, 2006: Meeting of NSC with minutes posted on the website. Poster boards depicting the plans to replace the Parish House were approved for debut at the Annual Meeting.

Feb 26, 2006: The NSC proposal to replace the Parish Hall was the featured topic at the Annual Meeting. Members of the congregation were invited to view plans in the dining room with NSC members available for questions. Comments were noted by NSC members.

Mar 5, 2006: Announcement in Crossings and posted on the webpage of NSC meeting from 1-3 PM to receive input regarding the plan to replace the Parish House. Meetings with other parish groups were noted, an invitation to contact NSC members was made.

Mar 5, 2006: Meeting from 1-3 in the Parlor with NSC available to explain plans and receive comments. Extensive notes from the listening session are posted on website.

Mar 6, 2006: Meeting of NSC with minutes posted on church website. Concerns regarding the loss of parking led to a recommendation that the Vestry form a Parking Committee.

Mar 7, 2006: The NSC met with the Youth Council to discuss the proposed Parish House replacement. Notes are posted on the website

Mar 21, 2006: The NSC attended a parish staff meeting to discuss plans to replace the existing Parish House. The discussion focused on office requirements.

Mar 22, 2006: The NSC met with the Men’s Breakfast group to discuss plans to replace the Parish House.

Mar 27, 2006: Meeting of the NSC with minutes posted on the Parish website. The discussion involved a review of findings gathered at the meetings on March 21st and 22nd.

Apr 2, 2006: Meeting with NSC committee with Student Residents to solicit input in regard to plans to replace the Parish House.

Apr 2, 2006: Announcement in Crossings and posted on the web about a listening session with the NSC on April 3 from 7-8:30 PM in the dining room.

April 3, 2006: Open meeting of the NSC in the dining room for discussion with member of the congregation interested in reviewing plans to replace the Parish House.

Apr 5, 2006: A history of the existing parish buildings was posted on the website to stimulate discussion regarding the value of additional expansion versus replacement.

Apr 9, 2006: The NCS announced in Crossings and posted on the website an announcement of the availability of the building history. Comments and questions were again encouraged to the church e-mail address.

Apr 16, 2006: The NSC again posted an announcement in Crossings and on the web regarding the availability of information about replacement of the Parish House. Changes to the design in response to comments were announced, and additional input was requested.

Apr 20, 2006: The NSC posted pictures of models of the proposed new Parish House on the church website.

Apr 23, 2006: The NSC met with a group of parents to discuss plans to replace the Parish Hall.

Apr 24, 2006: Meeting of the NSC with notes posted on the Parish Website. Changes to the plan were made based on responses received from the parish. Minutes with details of changes are posted on the website.

Apr 30, 2006: The NSC again posted an announcement in Crossings and on the web regarding the availability of information about replacement of the Parish House. Changes to the design in response to comments were announced, and additional input was requested.
