Worship with Holy Eucharist and Foot-washing
7:00 p.m., Church & Livestream
The name “Maundy Thursday” comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning “commandment” and marks Jesus’ words, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another,” (John 13:34). Jesus gives this commandment not only in word, but also in deed: by washing his disciples feet and instituting the Lord’s Supper, both of which we will observe in this poignant service. The service concludes with the ceremonial stripping of the altar and the reservation of the Sacrament as the church prepares for Good Friday. The service moves from the church, to an Altar of Repose set outside in the Cloister. The consecrated bread and wine from the Maundy Thursday Eucharist are reserved for communion on Good Friday on the altar of repose. Evocative of the garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus asks his disciples to “remain here, and stay awake with me,” (Matt 26:38) this is a chance to be with Jesus in silence, as he prepares for his impending death.
The Altar of Repose will be open for prayer and contemplation until midnight.
